A discovered snail became a lesson in animal anatomy at Barrow-upon-Humber Preschool in September 2025: staff followed the children’s curiosity, examining its movement and pointing out its eyes and mouth. That small example captures the preschool’s approach to learning through everyday discoveries.
At its 12 September 2025 inspection, Ofsted rated the preschool Outstanding and found safeguarding effective. The setting has capacity for 28 children and accepts ages from 24 to 60 months, at The Hive in Barrow-Upon-Humber.
The early years foundation stage sets the requirements for children’s learning, care and development, bringing these together rather than treating education as separate from everyday wellbeing.
In September 2025, forest-school sessions gave children practical experience of the environment, including sawing wood and learning precautions around fire. These were opportunities to attempt unfamiliar tasks and practise handling risk with adult guidance. Outdoor exploration also supplied spontaneous learning, as the encounter with the snail demonstrated.
Books were accessible throughout the preschool in September 2025. Alongside storytelling, staff listened to children’s ideas and kept conversations playful, giving them opportunities to practise expressing themselves. Learning extended into the community through participation in events and exploration of the local area. Stories and resources from different cultural backgrounds introduced children to ways of life beyond their own.
In September 2025, settling began with home visits before children started. Parents could share information about their child in familiar surroundings, giving staff a starting point for building relationships. Staff also helped children manage their feelings during changes between activities, linking emotional support to the practical rhythm of the day.
At the September 2025 inspection, Ofsted found that staff worked with families and professionals on targeted support for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities, and that children receiving additional funding made excellent progress. This gives families a concrete account of how support worked at that point, rather than a general promise of inclusion.
Health education was practical in September 2025: children practised toothbrushing, drinks were restricted to milk or water, and parents received guidance on preparing healthy packed lunches. Leadership distributed responsibilities such as healthy eating and parent relationships across staff, with training for those roles; a supportive committee contributed to running the setting.

In September 2025, the preschool provided government-funded early education for children aged two to four. That is a dated account of its funding provision, separate from its current age range and overall capacity.
Barrow-upon-Humber Preschool suits families seeking term-time care from 24 months, with a September 2025 account of practical outdoor learning, sustained conversation and support tailored to individual children. Its strongest details are small and tangible: a snail examined together, tools used with guidance, and parents involved before a child starts.
