Mini Minds Nursery

At a Glance

Pretend shopping lists, homemade balances and stories retold with wooden animals give Mini Minds Nursery its clearest character: play that makes children think, talk and experiment. These examples belong to January 2023, rather than a picture of today's daily routine.

At its January 2023 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Good and found safeguarding effective and children making good progress. Two areas needed attention: communication with the youngest children and staff responses to unwanted behaviour.

The Kettering setting has capacity for 36 children, accepting ages from two months to five years. That whole-nursery figure should not be read as the size of an individual group.

The Nursery Experience

The early years foundation stage sets the framework for children's learning, development and care: play, conversation and everyday routines provide opportunities to build skills.

In January 2023, older children turned imaginary shopping into writing and conversation, making lists and discussing their purchases with staff. Building a toy balance from wood and cardboard tubes brought ideas about weight into practical play. Younger children explored pasta by pouring and dropping it, an example of learning through handling materials.

Room on the Broom and The Gruffalo supplied starting points for older children's storytelling, with bricks and wooden animals helping them reconstruct events. Younger children listened to On the Farm. Books were used for shared activity, rather than simply sitting on shelves.

Outdoor play also had substance that January. Older children could move freely into the garden, using tricycles, balance bikes and ramps; tyres and planks became an obstacle course. Younger children investigated water and mud. These examples show how the outdoor space supported movement alongside exploration.

Care and Support

At the January 2023 inspection, Ofsted found that staff supported children with special educational needs and/or disabilities well, recognising developmental concerns, understanding other professionals' roles and supplying books and puppets for learning at home.

Everyday independence was visible that month too. Children practised serving lunch, pouring drinks and washing their hands. Parents received learning updates through conversations, online messages and stay-and-play sessions, creating several ways to discuss their child's experiences.

The weaknesses matter alongside those strengths. In January 2023, some interactions with younger children lacked clear speech to introduce vocabulary, while incidents involving running indoors and throwing toys were not consistently addressed or explained. Families should weigh those specific findings rather than treating the overall grade as the whole story.

Practical Information

Mini Minds Nursery is at 18a Park Avenue, Kettering, NN16 9RU. Opening hours are 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, across the year, with bank holidays excluded.

Things to Consider

  • Early language. January 2023 findings called for more consistent support for the youngest children's communication. At a visit, ask how practitioners now model clear speech during play.
  • Behaviour support. Staff responses to unsafe behaviour needed strengthening in January 2023. Ask how children are helped to understand consequences and manage their actions.
  • Attendance planning. The nursery opens throughout the year and closes on bank holidays. How would your preferred booking pattern fit within its working-week opening hours?

The Verdict

Mini Minds Nursery suits families seeking care for babies through to preschool age within a year-round working-week schedule. Its January 2023 examples give substance to its Good judgement: stories, practical investigation and outdoor movement all contributed to children's experiences. The language and behaviour findings remain the key points to explore when deciding whether its care fits your child.
