Monkey Puzzle Day Nursery Irthlingborough

At a Glance

A separate room for babies’ sleep, a light-filled sensory space and Monday drama give Monkey Puzzle Day Nursery Irthlingborough a recognisable character. Its provision stretches from early babyhood to preparation for school, with different spaces for children as their interests and independence develop. The practical appeal is the combination: room to be active, somewhere quieter to rest, and activities that take learning beyond the main playroom.

At its 18 October 2021 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Outstanding overall. That judgement belongs to 2021. Today, the nursery accepts children from 3 months to 5 years at Diamond Business Centre, Attley Way, Irthlingborough, NN9 5GF.

Full days, mornings and afternoons give families different ways to use the setting. A key person, a staged settling programme and an online learning journal connect nursery life with home, while funded childcare can be combined with paid hours.

The Nursery Experience

Rooms and Ages

The age stages run from Babies, covering three to sixteen months, through Tweenies at sixteen to twenty-six months and Toddlers from twenty-six months to three years, with Preschool beginning at around three. These stages make the progression through nursery easier for parents to understand, although a room move involves more than a birthday: the next environment brings different expectations and resources.

Green Baby room combines sensory exploration with an open space for movement, using black-and-white resources, textured boards and natural objects to give babies things to examine and handle. Orange Room supports Tweenies’ growing independence through sensory materials, with a cosy teepee and a sleeping area giving them somewhere to pause. In Pink Room, toddlers practise choosing activities and doing more for themselves, supported by an indoor slide/climbing frame and child-sized toilets. Blue Room brings preschool children early phonics, investigations and a weekly story, alongside direct access to outdoor play.

Sleep has its own space for the youngest children. Babies have a separate quiet room with cots, so rest takes place away from the activity of the main room. Staff monitor sleeping children and the room temperature. For a family bringing a young baby, that physical separation is a useful part of the care arrangement.

Learning and Activities

The EYFS framework organises learning and care around children’s development, including language, movement, relationships and early experiences of reading and numbers. Here, a play-based curriculum puts those areas into everyday activities rather than treating them as separate lessons. The curriculum describes how opportunities broaden as children grow, while observations help staff plan around individual interests.

Zozimus Drama adds a specific weekly activity: toddlers and preschool children take part on Monday afternoons in thirty-minute sessions using storytelling, music and props. A changing make-believe adventure gives children a reason to listen, imagine and join in. The sessions extend the play-based programme through drama.

In October 2021, preschool children worked together on a fort, discussing its design before assembling walls and a gate. A pretend café brought writing and numbers into play through food orders, a till and pretend money. Babies responded to adult conversation through play with a toy tiger, while two-year-olds played a tambourine along with songs. These examples show what learning looked like at that time: conversation, shared tasks and practical activity carried the teaching.

Outdoor and Community Life

Blue Room children can choose garden activities through daily free-flow access. Younger groups use the garden with supervision, and the nursery also has use of the top field, an enclosed grass area within the business centre grounds. Ball games and picnics give that larger space a different purpose from the main garden.

The Multi Sensory Room serves children across the age groups. A ball pit and slide provide active play, while a bubble tube, fibre-optic equipment and a light table offer other ways to explore light and movement. Baby yoga visitors and a Spanish teacher also use this space; these are additional experiences, with their own setting within the nursery.

Local educational outings include shops and places of interest. Visits from emergency services and other professionals introduce practical topics such as safety and veterinary work. These experiences connect children’s play with people and situations beyond nursery, without requiring every activity to happen in the same room.

Care and Support

Relationships and Communication

Settling begins with three free sessions, usually arranged during the week before a child starts. Parents are encouraged to stay for the first; the second lasts an hour, and the third is another hour that can include a meal or rest. The sequence gives a child short experiences of nursery life before their regular attendance begins.

A key person is assigned at the first settling session and remains involved throughout the programme. Staff gather information about interests, favourite toys and allergies in an all-about-me booklet, while a report at each settling stage helps parents and practitioners plan the next step. This gives the introduction a clear structure, with room for the child’s individual response.

Communication continues through an online Learning Journal and a mobile app carrying updates during the day. Parents can contribute experiences from home to the group-wide Learning Journey, a record of their child’s progress maintained by the key person. The key person also prepares a development report every six weeks. The value is continuity: parents have regular information to discuss, and home experiences can inform nursery planning.

Inclusion and Wellbeing

At the October 2021 inspection, Ofsted found safeguarding effective and praised individual support for children with SEND, including one-to-one help that enabled them to participate alongside other children. Those are dated findings. Current arrangements include staff training in first aid and food hygiene.

Monthly staff meetings provide time for questions, training updates and discussion. For babies, care initially follows sleep and rest routines from home; Tweenies and toddlers receive support with nappy changes and becoming confident using the toilet. Preschool children have access to toilets and handwashing as part of learning to manage their own needs.

School preparation includes contact with local schools about their expectations, alongside early phonics, small-group activities and encouragement to try tasks independently before seeking help. This is preparation for the next stage, with everyday independence as well as learning activities contributing to the transition.

The nursery cook prepares food on site, using a four-week rotating menu. The cook has allergen training, making dietary arrangements an important part of the conversation for children who need adaptations.

Practical Information

Sessions and Attendance

Full-day sessions run from 7.30am to 6.30pm; mornings run from 7.30am to 1pm, and afternoons from 1pm to 6.30pm. Half-day sessions can have top-up sessions attached. That gives families both whole-day attendance and shorter morning or afternoon patterns, with an extension option alongside half days.

Opening is Monday to Friday across 51 weeks of the year, with closure on bank holidays and during the Christmas week. Families planning work cover need to account for those closures as well as the daily session they choose. Enquiries can be made through the nursery’s enquiry form or by contacting the team directly.

Getting There

The address is Diamond Business Centre, Attley Way, Irthlingborough, NN9 5GF, just off the A6 opposite Kettering Outpatients hospital. A large car park has a barrier gate, providing a parking option within the nursery’s setting.

Funding and Paid Extras

Eligible families can use 15 or 30 hours funded childcare. Entitlement is stretched across the year; the working-parent entitlement of 30 hours becomes approximately 22 hours a week across 51 weeks. Funded and paid hours can be combined, so funding and the full attendance bill need to be considered separately.

Private fees include breakfast, lunch, tea, drinks and snacks, together with nappies, wipes and creams. For funded hours, meals and consumables such as nappies, wipes and sunscreen carry additional charges; trips and hours beyond entitlement are also charged separately. The fees page explains that structure, and current prices come in the nursery’s written quotation.

The parental declaration gives the nursery permission to claim funding from the local authority. Working-parent eligibility must also be reconfirmed through the HMRC Childcare Account every three months. These administrative steps matter alongside the session choice because they affect how funding is applied.

Things to Consider

  • Room progression and supervision. Tweenies spans sixteen to twenty-six months, crossing the under-two boundary. During a tour, ask how staffing is organised across that mixed age stage and how a move into the next room is agreed.
  • Funding beyond core hours. Meals, consumables and trips attract additional charges on funded provision. Request an itemised written quotation for the attendance pattern you want, separating funded hours from paid hours and extras.
  • Sleep and dietary routines. Babies have a separate quiet room, and the cook has allergen training. Use the settling discussion to agree sleep routines and confirm the current arrangements for any allergy or dietary requirement.
  • Monday enrichment. Zozimus Drama takes place on Monday afternoons for toddlers and preschool children. Families choosing shorter sessions should consider how their attendance pattern fits that activity.

The Verdict

Monkey Puzzle Irthlingborough suits families seeking full days, morning sessions or afternoons within a nursery that carries children from baby care towards school preparation. The separate baby sleep space, Blue Room’s outdoor access and weekly Zozimus Drama provide concrete reasons to consider it. Its Outstanding judgement is from October 2021, while the current care arrangements give parents specific matters to explore: settling, room progression and communication. The financial decision needs equal attention, especially where funded hours sit alongside charges for food, consumables and additional attendance.
