Weldon Pre-School

At a Glance

In June 2024, blocks, planks and a pretend building site gave Weldon Pre-School a recognisable character: staff turned children's interests into opportunities for play and learning. In June 2024, construction play held children's attention, while outdoor activities gave them opportunities to practise movement and persistence.

At its June 2024 inspection, Ofsted judged the provision Good and found safeguarding effective. The setting has capacity for 30 children aged 24 to 60 months and is based at Village Hall, Bridge Street, Weldon, Corby.

The Nursery Experience

The early years foundation stage provides the framework for children's learning, development and care. Here, the June 2024 examples included building, colour mixing, conversation and singing: play brought together practical exploration and language.

Outside, children had a designated space for bicycles and scooters. Water play demanded careful hand movements as they filled containers and squeezed paint. Painting wooden planks with coloured water also introduced a practical lesson about slippery surfaces. These were opportunities to experiment and manage small risks.

Ofsted's June 2024 inspection identified two improvements: extending mathematical learning more consistently and strengthening staff support for the vocabulary of children learning English as an additional language. Water activities illustrated the mathematics issue: staff could have made more of opportunities to discuss weight and measurement.

Community experiences also featured in June 2024. Police officers visited regularly, and children went to a park and local café. Activities marking cultural occasions included traditions relevant to the children attending, connecting learning with their families and the surrounding community.

Care and Support

In June 2024, key-person relationships were established, and staff used their knowledge of children's development and interests to plan activities. Parents knew which practitioner was their child's key person and received information about their child's time at pre-school. That gave families a clear point of contact.

Daily routines encouraged independence. In June 2024, children helped arrange tables and chairs and poured drinks for snacks. Handwashing before food and after using the toilet made personal care part of the day.

School preparation was practical too. Older children made weekly visits to a local school in June 2024, meeting teachers and exploring classrooms. Dressing in school uniforms during role play gave them another way to explore the change ahead.

Things to Consider

  • Mathematical learning. The June 2024 improvement concerned extending what children already understood. The relevant issue is how everyday play develops mathematical ideas, alongside hands-on exploration.
  • Learning English. Vocabulary support was an improvement priority in June 2024. For a child learning English alongside another language, ask how staff now build that support into play and conversation.
  • The weekly timetable. Monday and Thursday finish at midday; the other weekdays finish at 3pm. Term-time operation and holiday closures need to fit the family's wider childcare arrangements.

The Verdict

Weldon Pre-School suits families whose routines fit midday finishes on Monday and Thursday and later finishes on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, during term time. Its June 2024 picture combines outdoor exploration, practical independence and school preparation. The mathematics and additional-language priorities remain useful points for families weighing that picture.
