Rainbow Childcare

At a Glance

In April 2023, rock-pool visits, lifeboat volunteers and hands-on investigations gave Rainbow Childcare's activities a recognisably coastal character. In April 2023, children explored their local beach, visited community places and tackled activities that linked movement, language and curiosity. These were experiences with something concrete to discover, rather than play described only in broad terms.

At its April 2023 inspection, Ofsted rated Rainbow Childcare Outstanding, found safeguarding effective and praised the support for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities. The nursery has 36 places in total and occupies a single-storey building in Whitley Bay, with accessible entry and a large outdoor play area. It accepts children from birth to five years and older, and offers flexible attendance arrangements.

The Nursery Experience

Learning and Activities

The early years foundation stage sets the requirements for children's learning, development and care: in parent language, it connects play with developing communication, physical skills and independence. In April 2023, Rainbow's activities brought those elements together through practical tasks, with staff demonstrating skills and helping children extend their thinking.

Potion-making involved herbs, flowers, glitter and fruit, with tweezers, sieves and whisks giving children different ways to handle the ingredients. Another activity involved freeing vegetables from ice with small hammers. These examples made exploration active: children could investigate materials while practising control of their hands. Scissor use, pencil grip and dough modelling also formed part of that April 2023 day.

Language and mathematics ran through play. In April 2023, practitioners repeated words and talked alongside younger children's activities; with older children, questions encouraged fuller answers. Filling containers with rice or soil introduced capacity, while dinosaur and castle play brought in comparisons of size and position. The learning was attached to something children were already doing.

Outdoor and Community Life

A large outdoor play area gives the current setting space for outdoor activity alongside its indoor accommodation. The single-storey layout and suitable disabled access are useful physical features for families considering accessibility.

In April 2023, beach visits included exploring rock pools, and lifeboat volunteers came into the nursery. Children also visited the park, library and greengrocers and contributed to a local foodbank. That combination connected their play with local people, places and everyday community life. The coastal setting supplied more than a backdrop.

Care and Support

Relationships and Communication

Settling is tailored to the child. Parents can join their child for as many introductory visits as they feel necessary before trying a short stay alone. Staff help children find an activity they enjoy, encourage friendships and monitor how comfortably they settle. This gives families a gradual route towards separation rather than a single fixed introduction.

In April 2023, pictures helped children understand daily routines, and advance warnings prepared them for a change of activity. Older children talked about their feelings when signing themselves in. Parents supplied photographs of achievements at home so that these could be celebrated in the nursery. Together, these practices connected the child's home experiences with the nursery day.

Inclusion and Wellbeing

In April 2023, snuffle station areas contained mirrors and tissues so children could practise blowing their noses and disposing of tissues themselves. It is a small, practical example of independence: children had the materials to attempt an everyday care task themselves.

Well-being packs in April 2023 gave parents books and resources for significant changes, including a first dental visit or starting school. Staff also worked with education and health professionals to coordinate support for children with additional needs. For families managing a transition, the packs offered a concrete way to continue conversations and preparation at home.

Practical Information

Sessions and Attendance

Rainbow Childcare is at Rockcliffe Hall, Rockcliffe Street, Whitley Bay, NE26 2NW. Attendance can be arranged flexibly around individual requirements, with the nursery attempting to accommodate each family's requested pattern.

Opening hours change with the school calendar. During term time, the nursery opens Monday to Friday, 7.30am to 6pm; in school holidays, the opening window is 8am to 5.30pm. It operates through the year, closing for bank holidays and the week between Christmas and New Year. The shorter holiday day matters for parents whose working hours stay the same throughout the year.

Funding and Paid Extras

In April 2023, the nursery provided funded early education for children aged two, three and four. That is a dated participation fact rather than a promise of an individual funded place. Families should obtain a current written quotation for prices.

Things to Consider

  • Holiday hours. The school-holiday day ends at 5.30pm rather than the term-time closing time of 6pm. Compare both opening windows with your working day before choosing an attendance pattern.
  • A gradual start. Parents can accompany their child on repeated introductory visits before a short independent stay. Use a visit to discuss how that progression would work for your child.
  • The funded-place package. Funded early education formed part of the April 2023 offer. Which entitlements and attendance arrangements apply now, and how are meals and non-food consumables handled?

The Verdict

Rainbow Childcare suits families seeking attendance shaped around individual requirements, with care extending across term time and school holidays. Its large outdoor area and individually tailored settling arrangements are practical attractions. The April 2023 experiences give the nursery character: local coastal exploration, hands-on investigations and everyday independence sit alongside preparation for changes at home and school. The holiday opening window deserves careful attention when matching childcare to work.
