Indoor rock climbing, a garden music wall and a separate room for naps give Starchild Nurseries Malton a character that goes beyond its Market Place address. The strongest practical contrast is between spaces for active exploration and a sleep area shared by babies and toddlers. Children have places to move, investigate and rest, rather than one room expected to do everything.
At its November 2021 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Good overall, with children making good developmental progress. That is a dated judgement, rather than a description of every aspect of care today. The nursery has capacity for 50 children, accepting ages from three months to five years.
Its converted building sits at 36-38 Market Place, Malton, YO17 7LW. Community experiences extend beyond the garden, including shopping for fruit and vegetables and visiting the park. Full-day and half-day bookings give families different ways to use the nursery.
The Baby Room combines treasure baskets, storage positioned low enough for children beginning to cruise, and a black-and-white sensory area, with exploration alongside activities guided by adults.
The Pre-School Room has a room capacity of 30 children and combines indoor climbing walls with trains, dolls' houses and dinosaurs, while its daily structure mixes activities chosen by children with those led by adults. The room capacity is a maximum for that space, separate from the nursery's total capacity. Its preparation for school centres on the routine and activities children experience, rather than a promise about their next school.
The Sleep Room sits between the baby and toddler rooms and gives both age groups access to a separate resting space.
The early years foundation stage sets the framework for children's learning, development and care: here, play provides opportunities to practise communication, movement and early mathematical ideas. It is the educational baseline, rather than an extra programme. The room arrangements give that framework different expressions, from sensory exploration for babies to a more structured preschool routine.
Visiting Zoolab reptile guests add encounters with animals to Pre School's experiences.
In November 2021, mathematical play included arranging sticks into patterns, matching bowls with numbers and colours, and tackling progressively harder jigsaws. Children used counting and shape while doing something tangible. Staff also helped extend construction play by discussing how a train track could cross a road, turning a practical problem into an opportunity to think about a bridge.
The same November 2021 findings identified a weakness in planned activities: their learning purpose was not consistently clear, and some children became distracted. That distinction matters. Attractive resources and interesting activities need adults to keep the intended learning in view, rather than relying on the activity itself to hold every child's attention.
A water funnel wall and a handmade music wall make use of the nursery garden. The outdoor space is relatively small, so these features are useful details: they give children things to manipulate and experiment with within the space that exists. The garden is one part of outdoor life, rather than the whole offer.
Beyond it, children visit fruit and vegetable shops to buy snacks and go to the park to run around. Those outings connect nursery activities with the businesses and public spaces around Market Place. Shopping provides a real purpose for leaving the building, while the park gives children a different setting for physical play.
In November 2021, experiences outside the nursery included meeting farmers at the cattle market and travelling by bus or train to an animal park and a train museum. These are examples from that period, rather than a current excursion timetable. They show how local journeys formed part of children's experience at the time.
Sleep arrangements follow the routine a child has at home, and familiar comforters, blankets and sleeping bags are welcome. Individual Coracle beds are used for children aged around 6–20 months and encourage them to choose to rest; children needing more space use sleep mats with their own sheets. A familiar practitioner stays with a child to help them settle, and bedding is washed on site after use.
This gives families something more useful than a general promise of comfort: there are specific arrangements for familiar objects, adult reassurance and separate bedding. The lavender-scented sleep space is also a detail to weigh against an individual child's preferences. Rest is planned around the child, with different sleeping surfaces rather than a single arrangement for everyone.
In November 2021, communication with parents included conversations each day and updates through an electronic app. Staff also shared ideas to help parents develop children's learning at home. The useful distinction is between passing on information about the day and giving families practical ways to continue an interest beyond nursery.
At the November 2021 inspection, Ofsted judged safeguarding effective and found that work with other professionals supported children with special educational needs and/or disabilities. Those findings belong to that inspection date. Current recruitment arrangements include reference checks and DBS checks, which describe the nursery's procedures rather than providing a fresh inspection judgement.
The November 2021 improvement priorities also covered teaching children about healthy habits. At busy moments, adults did not consistently address behaviour such as reusing dropped cutlery or children trying to feed one another. This was a specific weakness in everyday guidance, alongside the separate concern about keeping planned learning clear.
Meals are cooked in the nursery kitchen, using a three-week menu rotation developed with a nutritionist and ingredients bought from local shops and fruit markets. The nursery's allergy policy is to adapt meals so children can have a suitable version resembling what their peers eat.
The standard opening day runs from 8am to 6pm, with a 7.30am start offered for an additional charge. This distinguishes the usual opening window from the earlier-start option. The nursery operates Monday to Friday throughout the year, closing for bank holidays and Christmas.
Full-day bookings run from 8am to 6pm. Half days last five hours, with morning attendance from 8am to 1pm or afternoon attendance from 1pm to 6pm.
Enquiries can be made through the contact form. The address is 36-38 Market Place, Malton, YO17 7LW, placing the nursery among the shops used for some of its community outings.
The nursery accepts government funding for 15 and 30 hours of childcare and sells privately paid sessions. Funded sessions carry a separate consumables charge. That charge belongs specifically to funded attendance and should be kept separate from the price of additional private hours.
The earlier 7.30am opening option also carries a surcharge. Current prices come in the nursery's written quotation; families can use the prices and funding page to understand the session structure and the distinction between funding and extras.
Starchild suits families seeking either full-day attendance or defined morning or afternoon sessions, with separate arrangements for young children's sleep. Its strongest concrete features are the accessible baby-room resources, preschool climbing equipment and garden walls for water and music play. Community shopping and park outings broaden the setting beyond its own outdoor space.
The November 2021 Good judgement provides a positive inspection position, but the two improvement priorities deserve attention: purposeful planned activities and consistent teaching of healthy habits. For parents, the most useful assessment is how those everyday practices work alongside the appealing rooms and experiences.
Ofsted rated the nursery Good overall at its inspection on 18 November 2021. Improvement priorities concerned the purpose and engagement of planned activities and children's understanding of healthy lifestyles.
It accepts children from three months to five years and has 50 places in total. Its spaces include the Baby Room, toddler provision, Pre School and a separate Sleep Room.
Babies have treasure baskets and a black-and-white sensory area, while Pre School has indoor climbing walls and visits from Zoolab reptile guests. The garden includes water and music walls, and children also visit local shops and the park.
It accepts government funding for 15 and 30 hours of childcare. Funded sessions carry a separate consumables charge.
Full days run from 8am to 6pm. Five-hour half days run from 8am to 1pm or 1pm to 6pm, and an earlier 7.30am start carries an additional charge.
