Jack-In-A-Box Playgroup and Bee'Z Nee'Z Out Of School Club

At a Glance

A staff-made pond, a mud kitchen and stories children could retell give this Oldham playgroup its character. These were features of daily life in July 2023, when children explored bugs outdoors and used books to develop their language.

Ofsted rated the setting Good at its July 2023 inspection, finding effective safeguarding and good planned learning, while identifying weaknesses in teaching about human differences and adapting group activities. There are 20 places in total at 213 Middleton Road, Oldham, OL2 5LS; children attending in July 2023 were aged two to four.

The Nursery Experience

The early years foundation stage sets the requirements for children's learning, development and care: play, communication and practical experiences contribute to their development. In July 2023, activities drew on children's interests, with stories, early writing and outdoor exploration providing concrete examples.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar prompted children to recount a story to friends. Ribbon sticks brought movement and music into practising shapes and lines, linking physical control with preparation for writing. Outdoors, the staff-made pond area and mud kitchen supported sensory exploration, while finding caterpillars and millipedes gave children living things to discuss.

There were limits to the teaching. In July 2023, group activities did not consistently extend learning for every child, and opportunities to explore different families and similarities between people were less developed than work on cultural celebrations.

Care and Support

At the July 2023 inspection, Ofsted found strong emotional support, excellent provision for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities, and close work with parents and other agencies to help children progress. A visual timetable helped children understand routines, giving them time to process what came next.

In July 2023, the colour-monster book activity gave children a way to discuss happiness, sadness and anger. Staff comforted children starting at the setting, while established routines helped them settle. Parents were involved in learning and could attend events during the year.

Staff support also mattered. In July 2023, coaching, supervision and team meetings supported practitioners, alongside encouragement to undertake further training. Safeguarding procedures included recruitment checks, staff training and daily checks of indoor and outdoor risks.

Practical Information

The address is 213 Middleton Road, Oldham, OL2 5LS. In July 2023, opening hours were 7.30am to 6pm across the year; early-years sessions ran from 9am to 3pm, Monday to Friday, during term time.

School-age care had a separate timetable in July 2023: 7.30am to 9am and 3.15pm to 6pm in term time, with 7.30am to 6pm sessions during school holidays. Funded early education for three- and four-year-old children was offered at that time.

Things to Consider

  • Group learning. In July 2023, teaching during group activities did not meet every child's learning needs consistently. Ask how activities now accommodate children at different stages.
  • Understanding other people. Teaching about different families and similarities between children needed development in July 2023. On a visit, look for how these ideas feature in books and everyday conversation.
  • Attendance planning. The July 2023 timetable separated term-time early-years sessions from school-age care. What attendance arrangements and funded-hours terms apply to your child's age now?

The Verdict

The July 2023 picture suits families who value story-led play, outdoor investigation and practical support with emotions. Its attendance arrangements then served both term-time early-years sessions and school-age care before and after school, with holiday provision for older children. The teaching weaknesses deserve attention alongside the positive care findings.
