Signing, picture prompts and independently chosen books give Four Woods Nursery a recognisable educational character in its October 2021 account. Its home is inside Four Woods Children Centre in West Park, Plymouth, linking the nursery's physical setting with the nearby family support described at that time.
Ofsted rated the nursery Good on 14 October 2021. That judgement came with two practical priorities: improving the organisation of group activities and giving children more opportunities to develop early literacy. These matter when deciding how well the day will suit a child who struggles to concentrate or is ready for more demanding language work.
Four Woods has capacity for 15 children aged two to five. It operates during term time, so its calendar is an important part of the childcare decision.
A toddler room and a preschool room separate the younger and older stages of nursery life. The preschool room is suitable for children aged three to five; the overall accepted age range starts at two. Whole-nursery capacity should not be read as the number of children sharing either room.
The early years foundation stage sets the framework for children's learning, development and care: play, communication and growing independence belong alongside early number and literacy experiences.
In October 2021, children selected books for themselves, used illustrations to revisit stories and enjoyed rhymes. Adults used signing and visual prompts to explain routines, while children also signed to communicate their needs. This gives a concrete picture of language learning that included ways to participate before spoken language was fully developed.
Sensory play had substance. In October 2021, children combined dough with feathers, pine cones and numbers, experimenting with texture and making their own creations. Adults introduced vocabulary during this play. Counting also appeared in play and snack routines, connecting number language with familiar parts of the day rather than keeping it solely within a separate activity.
There were limits to the organisation. In October 2021, some group activities continued beyond children's attention spans, and children ready to extend their early literacy did not consistently receive enough opportunities. For parents, the useful distinction is between engaging resources and the way adults organise learning around them.
In October 2021, children used resources indoors and outdoors and visited a local park for a picnic. The outing brought community experience into the nursery day. These are dated examples of what children did, rather than a promise of a current trip programme.
At its October 2021 inspection, Ofsted found effective safeguarding, good progress from children's starting points and prompt identification and support for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities. Those findings describe care at that visit.
Key persons knew children well in October 2021 and helped them settle. Staff also encouraged children to seek help and practise everyday tasks, including putting on socks. The emphasis was practical: adult support helped children attempt things for themselves.
Relationships received attention too. In October 2021, adults demonstrated taking turns and supplied language children could use with friends. Children explored feelings and kindness, making social learning part of ordinary interactions rather than a separate lesson.
Health learning included pretending to brush toy animals' teeth in October 2021. Children considered healthy choices and what damaged teeth could look like. Support also extended to changes of stage: children received help when moving between rooms and later to school, while links with the nearby children's centre gave families another source of support.
Four Woods opens during term time. Its Monday-to-Thursday opening hours are 8.30am to 5pm. This is an opening window; families should use the visit discussion below to establish the attendance arrangement that fits their week.

Funded childcare is offered, including 30 hours of funding for eligible working parents of children aged nine months to four years. Four Woods accepts children from age two, so the wider funding age range does not change its own accepted ages. Attendance here is term time.
Four Woods suits families seeking term-time childcare for children aged two to five, with separate toddler and preschool spaces. Its October 2021 account gives useful detail about communication, sensory exploration and everyday independence, alongside specific weaknesses in group learning and literacy provision. The strongest decision will connect those educational priorities with the family's weekly timetable and the child's stage of development.
