Water running down plastic ramps in a woodland area gives a concrete picture of learning at Derriford: in July 2025, children experimented with pouring and watched the results. At its 14 July 2025 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Good overall, highlighting early language work and independence while asking for more consistent teaching and greater challenge in children's learning.
Happy Days Nursery & Preschool, Derriford has capacity for 146 children aged 3 to 60 months. Based in Derriford Business Park in Plymouth, it combines a substantial whole-setting size with an inspection account full of small, everyday experiences: songs, shared play and babies practising with a spoon. Those details matter more than the headline capacity when judging what a child's day involves.
The early years foundation stage sets the requirements for children's learning, care and development, with play and everyday interaction supporting their learning. In July 2025, that translated into group activities for language each day, nursery rhymes for younger children and syllable counting for older ones. Listening walks encouraged children to notice different sounds. These were concrete ways of bringing communication into the day, rather than treating early literacy solely as preparation for reading.
Experimenting also had a physical setting. During July 2025, children used containers and plastic ramps in the woodland area to explore how water moved. The activity gave them something to investigate directly, with pouring and watching linked together. Elsewhere, children invited friends into their play, making shared activity part of nursery life.
Local walks and litter picking featured in July 2025. Looking after the environment therefore involved doing something practical, alongside discovering the surrounding area. This gives parents a useful picture of outdoor learning that extends beyond playing outside: children encountered their neighbourhood and took part in caring for it.
Teaching had two clear weaknesses at that point. Children's interests did not consistently lead to comparable learning opportunities across the nursery, and adults sometimes stopped short of taking play further. For families, the distinction is useful: an engaging activity is a starting point, but the next question or intervention determines how much a child can explore through it.
In July 2025, staff knew children personally, and friendships were evident in invitations to play together. Parents received information about children's next learning steps and encouragement to share books at home; a recent book swap had also supported that connection. This linked nursery experiences with something families could continue beyond the nursery day.
Key-person training had recently addressed recognising what children should learn next. Staff supervision included watching practitioners work and giving feedback. These were mechanisms for developing practice, relevant to the need for more consistent teaching across the setting.
At the July 2025 inspection, Ofsted found safeguarding effective and described effective collaboration with outside professionals to support children's development, including children with special educational needs and/or disabilities. In July 2025, staff sought specialist advice when needed and received updated training to help them respond to children's needs.
Emotional support was practical too. Stories and conversations helped toddlers put words to feelings such as anger and worry, with adults returning to those ideas during the day and intervening when children struggled. Babies practised serving lunch and handling a spoon with adult help. Independence began with ordinary routines.
Moving between age groups was supported in July 2025, alongside preparation for primary school through local school links and role play involving school uniforms. That made an unfamiliar next stage something children could explore through play.

Derriford suits families who value practical exploration, language activities and learning independence through everyday routines, alongside an opening window extending from early morning into the evening. Its July 2025 account gives substance to those priorities through water experiments, sound activities and support with feelings. The balance is clear: a Good judgement with specific teaching improvements to address. Consistency between groups and the way adults deepen play deserve attention when choosing it.
