A 35-place Copnor setting for children from three months to four years, Tops Day Nurseries: Copnor Nursery was rated Good by Ofsted in August 2022. That inspection found close key-person relationships, ambitious expectations and a play environment that encouraged children to explore freely.

The most memorable detail was the way children used practical experiences. Babies rolled balls along chutes and mixed powdered paint into gloop, while older children developed early writing and sound awareness. The same evidence captured outdoor play in wet weather, from puddles and a dinosaur swamp to a child-designed track for wheeled toys.

Rooms and Ages

Learning and Outdoor Life

In August 2022, staff modelled language well, held meaningful conversations and introduced new vocabulary across ages and abilities. Children also celebrated festivals to broaden their knowledge of cultures. Outdoors, they selected equipment, planned a track together and adapted it as it grew, combining imagination with cooperation and problem-solving.

Two areas needed improvement in 2022. Some staff interactions did not extend children's learning far enough, and large-group times were not always organised around the ages and individual needs present. Parents comparing settings should weigh those points alongside the stronger small-group and child-led examples. Safeguarding arrangements were effective in August 2022. Staff understood reporting routes, while leaders maintained training, recruitment checks and ongoing suitability monitoring. Healthy routines included fruit and vegetables at snack time, water or milk, social lunches and produce grown and tasted from the garden. These details joined care and learning: children made choices about drinks, experienced table manners with adults and connected food with what could be grown outdoors.
