Bees Knees Day Nursery

At a Glance

A family house with a kitchen at its centre gives Bees Knees Day Nursery its character. Meals are cooked on site, younger children have several play spaces, and the garden has an all-weather surface for outdoor play across the seasons. This Reading setting accepts children from 3 to 60 months.

At its 18 December 2023 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Good and found safeguarding effective. The daily detail from that visit is useful: babies received care that followed their home routines, while older children practised independence by helping themselves to food and pouring drinks. The improvement points concerned giving children more thinking time and helping parents understand their next learning priorities.

Attendance options include Standard Day and Full Day bookings, alongside shorter term-time funded sessions. Their different hours matter as much as the nursery's overall opening window.

The Nursery Experience

Rooms and Ages

For children under two, three large playrooms provide space to explore, with a sleep area in the room furthest back. Rest has a defined place within the younger children's accommodation. That is a useful physical detail for parents weighing how their baby will combine play and sleep during the day.

At two, children move into the garden room at the bottom of the garden, where a free-flow area supports their play and exploration. The Pre-School Rooms introduce phonics and numeracy through discovery and play. The progression changes both the surroundings and the learning emphasis as children grow.

Learning and Activities

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) sets the requirements for children's learning, development and care; here, children learn through play, with activities planned around their next developmental steps. Development Matters, guidance used to plan those steps, sits alongside it. Development Matters complements the statutory EYFS framework.

Boogie Mites is a group-wide addition providing regular music and movement activities. Its practical value is the repeated opportunity to join in with rhythm and movement, rather than a promise about future attainment. The group-wide Famly system shares observations with parents, connecting the nursery day with what families can see at home.

In December 2023, younger children explored oats, used chunky chalk and made painted patterns with tinsel. These were hands-on experiences in controlling materials and making marks. Activities followed children's interests and the next things they needed to learn, giving the play a purpose beyond keeping children occupied.

Questioning needed more care at that visit. Staff sometimes supplied answers before children had enough time to work out and express their own ideas. The issue was the pace of adult interaction: a good question only helps if the child has room to respond.

Outdoor and Community Life

Daily garden access is part of the current offer, with an all-weather surface, a sandpit and ride-on equipment. Climbing and balancing add physical challenges, while sand gives children a material they can shape and rearrange. Outdoor play therefore includes both movement and making things.

In December 2023, children used tricycles and balance beams, and a frog in the garden prompted discussion about its appearance and food. In December 2023, parents were encouraged to share family celebrations and invited to frequent family events throughout the year. Those examples show how everyday discoveries and family experiences became material for learning.

Care and Support

Comfort is part of settling: staff spend time building relationships, share books with children and offer cuddles. In December 2023, babies' familiar home routines carried into their care, and children sought reassurance from adults. For a family starting nursery, continuity in ordinary routines can be as important as the activity programme.

Communication combines regular progress meetings with online observations through Famly, including information about meals and sleep. Families receive an electronic Learning Journey, containing photographs and observations, when their child leaves for primary school. This gives them a record of development across their time at nursery.

The December 2023 improvement point about communication was more specific than simply keeping parents informed. Some families did not understand what their child needed to learn next, and a developing system for sharing that information was not yet established. Daily updates and clear learning priorities serve different purposes; parents need the latter to support learning at home.

Nursery cooks prepare food on the premises each day, and the menu includes different tastes and textures. The nursery's dietary policy is to accommodate most allergies and dietary requirements by adapting dishes where necessary.

Practical Information

Sessions and Attendance

The address is 97 Connaught Road, Reading, RG30 2UE. Opening hours are Monday to Friday, 7.30am to 6pm, with year-round operation and closures for bank holidays and Christmas.

Core bookings are Standard Day, 8am to 4pm, and Full Day, 8am to 5.30pm, with a choice of three, four or five days each week. Early Start extends care from 7.30am, and Late Finish extends it to 6pm; these additions are charged separately. The core booking is therefore different from using the entire opening window.

Term-time funded session options run from 9am to 3pm, 9am to 1pm or 1pm to 4pm, for 38 weeks a year. Enquiries can be made directly by email at beesknees@completechildcare.co.uk or by telephone on 0118 959 0364.

Funding and Paid Extras

Funded childcare is offered for eligible 15-hour and 30-hour entitlements. Funding applies across 38 weeks, rather than being stretched across the year, with up to six funded hours a day between 9am and 3pm, subject to the child's entitlement. For the 15-hour entitlement, the daily funded allocation is between three and six hours.

Funded hours carry no childcare charge, and the nursery requests a voluntary contribution towards lunch and snacks. Paid hours outside the entitlement are treated as wrap-around care, with catering, consumables and activities included in that charge. During the 14 non-funded weeks, full session fees apply. Current prices come in the nursery's written quotation.

The monthly payment plan averages annual fees over the remaining months of the year. Invoices still reflect actual monthly charges, with any difference reconciled when the plan ends or the child leaves early. Payment is by direct debit, and there is no administration fee; the deposit wording specifies no large financial deposit.

Things to Consider

  • The change at age two. Children move from the younger children's playrooms to the garden room. During a visit, discuss how this move is introduced and how familiar routines carry across.
  • Time to think and useful updates. In December 2023, adult questioning sometimes moved too quickly, and some parents were unclear about learning priorities. Ask for an example of how staff now give children time to answer and explain their next steps to families.
  • Funded hours and the working day. The core sessions extend beyond the funded window, and funding covers 38 weeks. A written quotation should distinguish funded time, paid extensions, non-funded weeks and the voluntary food contribution for your chosen pattern.
  • Dietary arrangements. The nursery accommodates most dietary requirements through changes to dishes. Allergy-affected families should confirm current arrangements for their child's specific needs before agreeing care.

The Verdict

Bees Knees suits families seeking a house-based setting with daily garden play, provision for younger children's sleep and a gradual shift towards phonics and numeracy. It serves both families choosing Standard Day or Full Day attendance and those using shorter term-time funded sessions.

The December 2023 Good judgement gives a dated assessment of quality. The most useful reservations are concrete: children needed more time to formulate answers, and parents needed clearer learning priorities. The decision rests on how those interactions work alongside the rooms, routines and attendance pattern your family needs.
