Rosedene Saltburn

At a Glance

Caterpillars, magnifying glasses and a carefully explained new word capture the strongest thread at Rosedene Saltburn: learning grows out of what children are already exploring. Outdoor experiences and conversation give this nursery its character, with Beach and Forest School sessions adding opportunities for learning in nature.

Ofsted rated the nursery Outstanding on 22 August 2025. The setting occupies Saltburn Family Hub within Saltburn Learning Campus, and has capacity for 54 children, with a current age range of seven months to five years.

Private childcare and funded childcare are offered, including a stretched-funding option. Opening hours extend from 7.30am to 6pm on weekdays, across 51 weeks of the year.

The Nursery Experience

Learning and Activities

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides the framework for learning, development and care: children build skills through play, conversation and practical experiences. At Saltburn, child-led exploration and natural resources shape that work. Beach and Forest School sit alongside the framework, rather than replacing it.

In August 2025, children searched for caterpillars with magnifying glasses while staff explained camouflage by connecting the unfamiliar word to the insects' colour and the leaves around them. Older children also discussed how caterpillars become butterflies. The useful detail is the connection between seeing, talking and understanding: children received an explanation they could relate to what they were examining.

Mathematics was equally practical in August 2025. Babies heard counting during hand-drying, while older children explored halves and wholes by cutting fruit and putting the pieces together again. These were small moments within ordinary routines, giving mathematical language something concrete to refer to.

Books were placed beside activities throughout the nursery in August 2025, and staff responded when children brought them something to read. Reading therefore served both enjoyment and investigation. A lending library extended that experience into the home, giving families books to share beyond the nursery day.

Outdoor and Community Life

Natural resources and outdoor learning are part of the current approach. Forest School offers learning through experiences in nature, while the spacious environment gives children room to explore their interests.

In August 2025, water play became a shared planning exercise. Children organised bottles and water to create streams down a slope, then worked together to replenish their supplies. That example gives parents a clearer picture than a general claim about outdoor play: children had to plan, cooperate and adjust what they were doing.

Babies were also trying out physical solutions in August 2025, working out where to put their hands before moving their legs to climb steps. The emphasis was on attempting the task themselves. For the youngest children, that makes everyday movement part of learning as well as physical activity.

Care and Support

In August 2025, younger children were encouraged to choose their own play materials, while staff helped them manage feelings and behaviour before difficulties escalated. Older children made space for other children's ideas during play. Independence and consideration for others were practised together.

At the August 2025 inspection, Ofsted found safeguarding effective and praised the intensive, coordinated support for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities and their families. Staff identified possible developmental delays and pursued targeted interventions, working with the agencies involved so support was consistent.

Individual needs also influenced book choices in August 2025. Funding for particular children was used to select books relevant to their circumstances, helping them participate in learning and recognise their own experiences. This is a concrete example of adapting resources rather than expecting every child to respond to the same material.

Families received online-safety information in August 2025, alongside encouragement to support learning at home through the lending library. Meals and snacks are prepared on site, bringing food preparation into the nursery's daily operation.

Practical Information

Sessions and Attendance

The address is Saltburn Children Centre, Marske Mill Lane, Saltburn-by-the-Sea, TS12 1HJ. The nursery opens Monday to Friday, from 7.30am to 6pm, for 51 weeks annually; closures include bank holidays and a week at Christmas.

Alongside early-years childcare, the setting offers Holiday Club and Out of School Club provision, with school pick-ups and drop-offs for Saltburn Primary School. These services give families with older children another practical reason to consider the location.

The nursery occupies grounds shared with Saltburn Learning Campus. Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place.

Funding and Paid Extras

Both privately paid care and 30-hour government-funded places are offered. Funding can be stretched across the year, spreading the entitlement over more weeks rather than concentrating it into term time. Eligibility remains a condition of the funded offer.

Enquiries can be made through the contact form or directly by telephone on 01287 839080. Current prices should be obtained in the nursery's written quotation.

Things to Consider

  • Your child's starting age. The current age range begins at seven months. For a baby joining near that age, use a visit to discuss settling, sleep and how the day will be organised around their routines.
  • The funded-care budget. Saltburn offers stretched funding as well as private childcare. Request a written breakdown separating funded hours, additional care, meals, non-food consumables and activity charges before agreeing the contract.
  • Outdoor learning in practice. Beach and Forest School sessions form part of the offer. During a visit, ask how these experiences are organised for your child's age and what clothing they need.

The Verdict

Rosedene Saltburn suits families who value outdoor exploration and learning rooted in children's own interests, alongside the choice of private or funded childcare. Its August 2025 examples are persuasive: vocabulary grew from caterpillar hunting, mathematics from fruit preparation, and cooperation from water play.

The weekday opening window and stretched funding make it relevant to families arranging care across the year. For those combining nursery care with an older child's school routine, the Saltburn Primary School collection service adds practical value.
