1st Safari, Genesis, Milnrow

At a Glance

Individual learning plans and an outdoor area for climbing, movement and exploration give Genesis Milnrow its character. At 23 Clifton Street in Milnrow, the emphasis is on adapting activities to children's interests and helping them become more independent. The early-years age range runs from three months to five years, with Babies, Toddlers and Pre-School provision.

Ofsted rated the nursery Good on 31 August 2023. That judgement comes with useful detail and two important improvement points: more consistent feedback on staff practice, and healthier main meals. Those are practical matters for families weighing the care and teaching their child will receive.

Morning, afternoon, full-day and Short Day bookings provide different ways to organise attendance. Meals and snacks are included in session fees, and eligible families can use funded hours within the core daytime window.

The Nursery Experience

Rooms and Ages

Babies accommodates children from three months to two years, with care shaped around each baby's routine. Toddlers serves two- to three-year-olds and emphasises confidence and growing independence. Pre-School covers ages three to five, with individual preparation for school and the development of skills. The progression makes independence a recurring theme, while giving each stage its own emphasis.

Personal learning plans, individual guidance and activities linked to children's interests are part of the current approach. For parents, the useful question is how these translate into the next manageable step for their own child, rather than a single activity expected to suit everyone.

Learning and Activities

The early years foundation stage sets the framework for children's learning, development and care: play supports communication, physical skills and early understanding of the world. At Genesis Milnrow, personalised activities sit within that framework.

In August 2023, babies practised movement on low equipment, while older children worked with scissors, play dough and shaping tools. These were concrete opportunities to develop coordination. Different materials asked children to use their bodies and hands in different ways.

Language and early mathematics also ran through play in August 2023. Adults talked alongside babies and encouraged their sounds; with older children, questions and words describing position extended conversation. Counting balls moving through a tube and sorting construction cubes by colour brought numbers into activities children could handle and see. Learning was attached to an experience, rather than presented only as an abstract task.

Outdoor and Community Life

The outdoor area provides room to climb, run and explore, with sensory play, physical challenges and activities involving nature. Outdoor play continues across the seasons. This adds movement and different materials to a day that also includes play indoors.

Care and Support

Relationships and Communication

Regular communication with families accompanies individual learning plans and guidance. Daily updates are included in the fee arrangements, giving parents an ongoing connection with their child's nursery day.

In August 2023, parents knew their child's key person, and staff used their knowledge of children's home lives to support them. Younger children received comfort when tired, while older children were helped to solve small problems together. These examples show what responsive care looked like at that point: recognising a child's signals and adjusting the adult's response.

Independence had a practical expression in August 2023. Children helped themselves to food, poured drinks and returned classroom materials to their places. These small responsibilities gave them opportunities to practise doing things for themselves. Staff training and coaching had also supported teaching, although more timely monitoring and sharper feedback remained an improvement priority.

Inclusion and Wellbeing

At the August 2023 inspection, Ofsted found safeguarding effective and children, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities and funded places, making good progress from their individual starting points. This is a dated assessment of practice, rather than an assurance about every child's future experience.

In August 2023, staff shared relevant information with other professionals involved in children's care and learning, supporting preparation for the next stage, including school. Main meals were an improvement concern that month: some lacked nutritional balance, children rejected some dishes, and convenience food was sometimes used when a cook was absent.

Practical Information

Sessions and Attendance

The nursery opens Monday to Friday, from 8am to 6pm, throughout the year except bank holidays. Morning sessions run from 8am to 1pm, afternoons from 1pm to 6pm, and a Full Day from 8am to 6pm. The Short Day runs from 8.30am to 4pm. That shorter option matters for families whose commitments finish before the end of the full nursery day.

An early start from 7.30am can be requested and attracts a separate charge. Extra time beyond a booked session is also charged separately. These extensions need to be considered alongside the chosen session, rather than treated as part of its standard price.

Initial applications use an online form, followed by contact from the nursery and a full registration pack before attendance begins. The form also collects dietary, allergy and medical information, giving families a way to identify care requirements at the application stage.

Getting There

The address is 23 Clifton Street, Milnrow, Rochdale, OL16 4HP, in a residential area. Nearby tram links connect with Manchester, Oldham and Rochdale, and bus services also run nearby.

Funding and Paid Extras

Eligible families can use 15 to 30 funded hours, restricted to the period between 8am and 6pm, with no top-up fees. Breakfast, lunch, tea and snacks are included in session fees, including the funded-session offer.

Early starts and additional hours sit outside that core arrangement and carry separate charges. Current prices come in the nursery's written quotation; the fees page sets out the session and charge structure.

Things to Consider

  • Meals in practice. In August 2023, main meals needed better nutritional balance. At a visit, discuss the current menu, who prepares it and how staff respond when a child refuses a meal.
  • Consistency between practitioners. The August 2023 improvement priority included more timely supervision and feedback. Ask how staff now review their practice and keep individual learning plans useful across the team.
  • Your funded attendance plan. Funded hours fall between 8am and 6pm, while early starts cost extra. Before committing, ask how funding would fit your chosen sessions across the year.

The Verdict

Genesis Milnrow suits families choosing between morning or afternoon attendance, a Short Day and full-day sessions. Individual plans, age-specific provision and outdoor play give its offer a clear shape; included meals simplify the session charge structure.

The August 2023 Good judgement is a useful starting point. Its practical strengths deserve attention alongside the improvement priorities concerning staff feedback and main meals. For a family seeking care built around a child's routines and interests, the decisive test is how those arrangements work for their own child.
