In April 2025, sunflower seeds, chalk animals and a teddy taken home illustrated Hopwood Park Playgroup's practical learning and links with family life. At its April 2025 inspection, Ofsted rated the playgroup Good and judged its safeguarding arrangements effective.
Based at Hopwood Bowling Club in Heywood, the playgroup has capacity for 24 children. Children attending in April 2025 were aged two to four; that age range describes the inspection group.
In April 2025, children's interests helped shape activities. Knight costumes brought from home prompted learning about St George's Day, giving children's own contributions a place in the day.
The early years foundation stage sets expectations for children's learning, development and care; here, the April 2025 examples show learning through play. Children explored quantities while planting sunflower seeds and experimented with moving sand into diggers. Planting also allowed staff to adapt an activity: older children explored what flowers need to grow, while younger children handled soil and practised vocabulary.
Creative work included painted flowers, chalk animals outdoors and attempts at name writing. In April 2025, physical activities included cycling and balancing, with occasional team sports in the local park. These experiences brought movement alongside language, number and early writing.
At the April 2025 inspection, Ofsted found that staff recognised learning gaps, involved external agencies where further help was needed and supported good progress towards school.
In April 2025, daily communication books carried ideas for extending learning at home, and taking the playgroup's teddy home gave families another way to participate. However, communication needed greater consistency: some parents were unclear about important care information, including their child's key person. A familiar activity to share at home is useful, but families also need clear information about responsibility for their child.
Health routines in April 2025 included handwashing before food and toothbrushing after snacks. Children also understood that wet sections of the playground called for different behaviour.
The address is Hopwood Bowling Club, Hopwood Green, Coronation Avenue, Heywood, OL10 2NB.
In April 2025, the playgroup operated on weekdays during term time, with sessions running from 9am to midday. Government-funded childcare was provided at that time. This describes a morning attendance pattern rather than a whole-day timetable.
