A camera in the garden, a pet tortoise and a display celebrating achievements at home give Middleton Nursery School a recognisable character. In March 2022, children photographed discoveries outdoors, cared for Stanley the tortoise and shared family milestones through Proud Cloud, a display of pictures and comments from home. These were practical ways to connect curiosity, consideration and family life with learning.
Ofsted rated the nursery Good at its 17 March 2022 inspection. Its current capacity is 40 children, with an accepted age range of 12 to 60 months. The address is 236-240 Oldham Road, Middleton, Manchester, M24 2DP.
The strongest decision points are the personal learning arrangements described in March 2022 and the practical facilities, including child-sized bathroom fittings and an outdoor pram storage unit. The outdoor learning offer also deserves attention: it was one of the areas needing development at that visit.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides the framework for learning and care: children learn through play, developing language, movement and social skills alongside early reading, mathematics and exploration. Observations inform assessments, so learning is understood through what children do rather than through tests. This gives parents a way to discuss development through everyday experiences.
In March 2022, planned activities and familiar routines introduced shapes and letters, while stories, rhymes and books chosen by children supported early literacy. Adults spoke with children at eye level and gave those learning English time to express themselves. The emphasis was on conversation as well as completing an activity.
Children's ideas had a visible place in the day. In March 2022, garden photographs were printed for discussion with other children; using the camera also involved sharing equipment and taking turns. Caring for Stanley gave children a concrete reason to think about another living creature's needs. These examples show how a small activity could carry several learning purposes.
The garden offered opportunities for movement in March 2022, but its learning resources were uneven. The mud kitchen offered too little challenge, and the small sand pit restricted exploration and problem-solving. Indoor experiences were better supplied with resources than outdoor ones.
Learning about celebrations also featured in March 2022, although opportunities to understand the surrounding community were limited. The improvement priorities were connected: broaden what children could learn outside and use the local environment more effectively. For families who value outdoor exploration, the substance of the garden matters as much as access to it.
At the March 2022 inspection, Ofsted found safeguarding effective and additional funding well used to tailor support for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities. Those are dated judgements about practice, rather than assurances about every child's future experience.
In March 2022, children had close relationships with their key person and sought adults out when they needed emotional support. Staff helped them talk about feelings. A designated wellbeing officer also offered conversations to parents and staff during difficult periods, extending support beyond children's activities.
Proud Cloud linked home and nursery in March 2022 by displaying family contributions about children's achievements. The road to pre-school resource helped staff support changes within the nursery and preparation for school. Both arrangements gave everyday milestones a place alongside planned learning, rather than treating development as something that happened only during nursery hours.
The nursery has a bespoke kitchen and can accommodate special dietary needs, including gluten-free diets and diabetes. Child-sized toilets and sinks, together with baby-changing facilities, support practical care routines.
Opening hours are 7.30am to 6.30pm, Monday to Friday. The nursery operates across the year, closing for bank holidays and Christmas. That opening window gives working families a useful starting point for considering how childcare fits their day.
Enquiries can be made by telephone or through the contact form. The address on Oldham Road places the enquiry route and the childcare setting at the same Middleton location.
Parking accommodates up to 7 cars, and there is an outdoor unit for storing prams. These are useful practical provisions for families bringing young children and their equipment.
In March 2022, the nursery provided funded early education for two-, three- and four-year-old children. Families considering a funded arrangement should use the charge-structure question below when discussing attendance.
Middleton Nursery School suits families seeking childcare across the year who value play, conversation and connections between home and nursery. Proud Cloud and the road to pre-school resource give its March 2022 account a personal character, while parking, pram storage and child-sized facilities add practical value. The Good judgement is a useful dated reference point; outdoor challenge and community learning remain the clearest subjects for a visit discussion.
