Chalk marks on paving stones, bug hunts with binoculars and obstacle courses made from tyres give Great Wakering Pre-School a recognisable character: learning through play, with outdoor exploration woven into the day. Those examples come from July 2024, when Ofsted rated the setting Good. They give parents something more useful than a grade alone: a picture of how children were using their surroundings to learn.
The pre-school welcomes children from two years to school age and has capacity for 40 children. Its Great Wakering High Street home is The Old School, at SS3 0EJ. A large outdoor garden gives children space for play beyond the indoor setting.
Independence is another thread in the July 2024 account. Children could choose between indoor and outdoor play and decide when to eat their snack. Small decisions mattered alongside adult-led conversation.
The Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum shapes the educational offer: children learn through play, with activities adapted to their interests, abilities and stage of development. That makes the child's starting point relevant to the activities staff plan, rather than expecting everyone to tackle the same task in the same way.
In July 2024, learning drew on ordinary play materials. Chalk drawings outside prompted conversations about numbers and symbols. Magnifying glasses and binoculars gave a bug hunt an investigative element, while children helped construct obstacle courses. These examples connect early thinking skills with something children can handle, change and explore.
Stories supplied language too. In July 2024, We're going on a bear hunt introduced descriptive vocabulary that children could use in conversation. There was also a clear improvement point: staff sometimes moved on with questions before children had enough time to form an answer. The next step was to allow more thinking time. For a child who needs longer to respond, the pace of conversation matters as much as the question itself.
The garden supports physical and imaginative play. In July 2024, children balanced and travelled across blocks, crates and tyres, combining movement with the challenge of working out a route. Imaginary boat journeys gave them opportunities to play together, while sand offered a different sensory experience.
This is a useful combination for preschool children: movement, make-believe and investigation can happen within the same outdoor space. The examples show how equipment and loose materials were used, rather than making the garden's size the whole story.
At the July 2024 inspection, Ofsted found safeguarding effective, recognised support for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities, and judged settling and transitions to be well supported. Home visits and information gathered at the start helped staff understand children, while parents received updates about their development.
In July 2024, a calm area gave children somewhere to pause, listen to stories and consider their feelings. Staff helped children talk about emotions and manage their behaviour. This added a quieter option alongside active play, with books used to connect experiences and feelings.
Preparation for school included practical self-care. In July 2024, children practised managing their belongings, washing their hands and using the toilet independently. Conversations also covered exercise, food choices and dental care. These are everyday habits a child can carry into the next stage of education.
Staff development formed part of that dated picture. In July 2024, supervision, coaching and training supported the team's understanding of how children learn. For parents, the relevant detail is the continuing attention to staff practice, alongside the specific need to slow down questioning.
The pre-school is at The Old School, High Street, Great Wakering, Essex SS3 0EJ. Enquiries can be made through its contact form or by email, and an application form can be downloaded, completed and returned.
In July 2024, the setting operated during term time, Monday to Friday, with sessions running from 8.30am to 3.30pm. This is a dated attendance arrangement rather than a description of a current choice of booking patterns.
Funded early education is offered for three- and four-year-olds: 15 hours each week, rising to 30 for children eligible for Extended Entitlement. Eligible two-year-olds can access 15 funded hours weekly. Eligibility remains part of the offer, rather than every child receiving the longer entitlement.
Non-funded sessions can be paid for through the Government Tax-Free Childcare Scheme, the Childcare Grant Payment Service or accepted childcare voucher schemes. These payment routes give families options for meeting the cost of paid attendance alongside funded provision.
Great Wakering Pre-School suits families seeking play-based early education from age two, with outdoor space and an emphasis on growing independence. The July 2024 picture combines practical self-care, stories and hands-on exploration. The caveat is equally concrete: children needed more time to answer questions. That is a useful point to weigh alongside the garden and the funded early education offer.
Ofsted rated it Good at its 11 July 2024 inspection. The improvement point was to give children more time to think before answering questions.
