Cherry Blossom Nursery

At a Glance

A baby-to-preschool journey and a separate playcentre give Cherry Blossom Nursery its character. Seedlings, Buds and Blossom mark the stages of nursery life, while Cherry Blossom Playcentre adds spaces for energetic, imaginative and quieter play. The distinction matters: the playcentre is a separate offer, with a free session each term for children attending the nursery.

At its November 2023 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Good, found safeguarding effective and praised the support for children's language development. That judgement sits alongside two clear priorities: activities better matched to the youngest children, and more precise information for parents about learning progress.

At 8 London Road in Bexhill-on-Sea, Cherry Blossom has 30 places in total and accepts children aged 0 to 60 months. Full days, morning sessions and afternoon sessions provide different ways to organise attendance.

The Nursery Experience

Rooms and Ages

Seedlings is the baby room, where care is organised around individual needs. Buds serves children aged two to three, combining continuing key-person support with greater scope to explore independently. Blossom is the preschool room, where free-flow play supports independence ahead of school.

Those stages offer a gradual change in the nursery day rather than a single arrangement for every age. Babies receive individual care; older children have increasing opportunities to make choices. For parents, the useful distinction is how support changes as children become more confident, rather than simply the room name.

Learning and Activities

The EYFS is the framework for children's learning, development and care, bringing learning and everyday care together through play. Cherry Blossom's current approach centres on children exploring their interests, with activities such as storytelling and tower building used to encourage creativity and independence.

In November 2023, children's interest in animals and small creatures shaped activities involving movement, early mathematics and conversation. Art materials and time to experiment allowed children to develop their own creations. Magnetic construction pieces provided another concrete example: staff discussed shapes and dimensions, then introduced ideas that could extend a child's building.

The same November 2023 account exposed an important age distinction. Topic planning worked better for older children than for babies, whose activities sometimes involved concepts beyond their understanding. Adapting a shared theme was not always enough. For a baby, the relevant test is whether the activity starts with what they can understand and enjoy.

Outdoor and Community Life

Cherry Blossom Playcentre has four themed rooms. Soft Play includes padded equipment and a large slide; the Messy Room supports hands-on creative activities; the Imagination Room provides pretend-play settings; and the Sensory Room uses lighting, textures and sounds for quieter exploration.

These spaces belong to the playcentre rather than the nursery's age-based room structure. The free playcentre session each term gives attending families a separate opportunity to use them. It also offers a practical choice between active play, making things, role play and a calmer sensory experience.

Care and Support

Relationships and Communication

Key-person support continues through the move into Buds, helping children explore more independently while retaining a familiar adult relationship. Seedlings' individual-care approach gives the youngest children's needs a clear place in the nursery's current offer.

At the November 2023 inspection, Ofsted found that familiar staff relationships supported children's settling and that children with SEND benefited from individual plans agreed with parents and referrals for additional professional help. The practical mechanism was a plan understood by staff, rather than a broad promise of support.

In November 2023, daily conversations with parents covered activities and emotional wellbeing, but changes to learning-goal systems had weakened the sharing of progress and next steps. Friendly contact and useful learning information are different things. Parents need both to understand what their child is doing and how to support the next stage at home.

Inclusion and Wellbeing

The current management structure includes a childcare manager and deputy manager, both with designated safeguarding lead responsibilities. The childcare manager holds a Level 5 Foundation Degree, and the deputy is Level 3 qualified. These are facts about the leadership team, rather than a description of staffing in every room.

In November 2023, some indoor areas needed better presentation and cleaning routines were inconsistent; refurbishment was planned at that time. Food service and nappy changing followed appropriate hygiene procedures. The distinction deserves attention: specific care routines and the wider condition of indoor spaces were separate findings.

Practical Information

Sessions and Attendance

Opening hours are 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday. The booking choices include full days from 8am to 6pm or 8am to 4pm, mornings from 8am or 9am until 1pm, and afternoons beginning at 1pm and ending at either 5pm or 6pm. These alternatives let families choose a shorter attendance window as well as a full day.

The nursery operates across the year, closing on bank holidays, for the final two weeks of August and for one week at Christmas. Those closures matter when matching childcare to working arrangements. Nursery enquiries can be made through the contact form, by telephone or by email.

Getting There

The address is 8 London Road, Bexhill-on-Sea, TN39 3JU, opposite St. John's Church and beside O'Donnell House. Those landmarks give families a precise way to identify the building.

Funding and Paid Extras

Funded childcare covers the nursery's stated nine-month, two-year and three-/four-year funding categories, including universal and 30-hour funding, with eligibility beginning in the term following the relevant age milestone. A stretched funding option is offered. Private childcare is also offered; current prices come in the nursery's written quotation.

Daily charges include breakfast, snacks, lunch and late tea during attendance. Funded places have separate, optional consumable charges, including non-food consumables; families who opt out supply the required items themselves.

Enrichment on funded places is also charged separately and can be declined. The funding and fees page sets out that structure. It is useful to distinguish paid nursery attendance, funded hours and optional additions before choosing a pattern.

Things to Consider

  • Activities for babies. In November 2023, topic planning did not always match the youngest children's understanding. On a visit, ask how Seedlings activities now begin with babies' own interests and abilities.
  • Progress information. The November 2023 improvement priority included clearer sharing of learning goals and next steps. Ask to see how that information reaches parents alongside daily care updates.
  • Indoor upkeep. In November 2023, refurbishment was planned after concerns about presentation and cleaning. A visit is an opportunity to discuss the work completed and look at the spaces your child would use.
  • Funded-place choices. Consumable and enrichment charges can be declined, with supplies required when opting out of the consumable charge. Request a written quotation distinguishing your attendance pattern, funded hours and chosen additions.

The Verdict

Cherry Blossom suits families seeking either full-day attendance or shorter morning and afternoon sessions, with a gradual progression from individual baby care to more independent preschool play. Its separate playcentre adds a useful family benefit rather than defining the nursery day.

The November 2023 strengths were clear, but so were the practical improvement priorities. For families considering a place, the most useful discussion centres on baby activities, meaningful progress updates and the condition of the indoor spaces.
