Shining Pandas Nursery

At a Glance

Soft-play challenges, hands-on exploration and a Friday session shared with parents give Shining Pandas Nursery its character. Based at St Judes Church Hall in Englefield Green, it takes children aged two to five and has 26 places in total. The emphasis is on the nursery years rather than baby care.

At its May 2024 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Good and judged safeguarding effective. Practical strengths included activities that exercised both large movements and finer hand skills, while the priorities for improvement concerned clearer teaching intentions and giving children longer to answer questions.

Term-time attendance combines a core nursery day with flexible hours and an after-nursery extension. That breadth matters for families fitting childcare around different working patterns, although holiday provision follows a separate timetable.

The Nursery Experience

Learning and Activities

The early years foundation stage sets the framework for children's learning, development and care: play and everyday activities should help children build skills as well as enjoy themselves. Here, the May 2024 activities included puzzles, exploring materials by hand and discussing teeth and food. These examples span persistence, sensory exploration and conversation rather than relying on one kind of activity.

In May 2024, the soft-play area gave children opportunities to practise climbing, balancing and directing their movements towards targets. Picture-making involved glue and sticky tape, bringing smaller hand movements into the day too. Physical learning therefore took more than one form, with movement challenges alongside tasks requiring control and coordination.

The teaching priorities deserve equal attention. In May 2024, staff sometimes needed a clearer understanding of the knowledge or skill an activity was meant to develop. Questions could also move too quickly for children to work out an answer. For parents, the distinction is between a busy activity and an activity whose purpose staff can explain: both engagement and thinking time matter.

Familiarity Before Nursery

Stay N Play is a prebooked Friday session where parents and children play together, meet staff and become familiar with the setting. It accepts children from 15 months, ahead of nursery attendance from age two, and runs from 1pm to 2.30pm. This gives families a concrete way to build familiarity before a child begins attending independently.

Care and Support

At the May 2024 inspection, Ofsted found that children with special educational needs and/or disabilities received good support, with the special educational needs coordinator developing plans alongside families, staff and other professionals. The important mechanism is that shared planning: support was organised around the individual child rather than left to a general promise of inclusion.

In May 2024, routines helped children understand what would happen next, and sand timers made taking turns more concrete. Staff used encouragement to reinforce behaviour. These are useful everyday tools for children learning to share both resources and adult attention.

Communication also had a practical role in May 2024. Families received information about their child's day and development, plus suggestions for activities at home; they could bring concerns to the manager. That combination gives parents something to act on between nursery sessions, rather than simply an account of what happened.

Snacks form part of the voluntary contribution towards consumables, alongside wipes, tissues and activity materials. The After nursery club also includes an extra healthy snack at 4pm in its afternoon routine.

Practical Information

Sessions and Attendance

The address is St Judes Church Hall, Kings Lane, Englefield Green, TW20 0TZ. Opening hours are 8.30am to 5.30pm, with the main nursery operating Monday to Friday during term time for 38 weeks.

The core term-time day runs from 9am to 3pm, Monday to Friday. An Early Bird option starts at 8.30am. After nursery club runs from 3pm to 5.30pm, extending the core 9am-to-3pm day, and flexible hours are also offered.

Holiday club has its own named patterns: Half day from 8.30am to 12.30pm, Regular day from 8.30am to 3pm, and Extended day from 8.30am to 5.30pm. It does not operate during the February, May or October half terms. Families needing care beyond term time therefore need to distinguish the nursery timetable from the holiday programme.

Enquiries can be made through the contact form, by telephone or by email. Stay N Play requires advance booking.

Funding and Paid Extras

Funded childcare is accepted for core hours, including FEET for eligible two-year-olds, the universal entitlement for three- and four-year-olds, and 15 and 30 hours funding. Delivery is term time; the nursery's age range remains two to five, so funding information about younger children does not extend its nursery intake.

Core funded hours carry no top-up fee. A voluntary contribution covers snacks and non-food consumables such as wipes, tissues, paper and toilet rolls; this is a separate contribution rather than those items being included in the funded entitlement. Extra private hours beyond funded hours are charged, with invoices issued monthly. Current prices come in the nursery's written quotation, and the hours and fees page explains the charging structure.

Things to Consider

  • Teaching purpose and thinking time. The May 2024 priorities concerned clearer intentions for activities and more time for children to respond. On a visit, ask staff to explain what a current activity teaches and how they give quieter children space to answer.
  • Holiday coverage. Holiday club excludes February, May and October half terms. Those breaks need particular attention when matching childcare to a working calendar.
  • Lunch and the longer afternoon. The core term-time day runs through lunchtime, while After nursery club adds a snack at 4pm. Ask how lunch works for your chosen pattern and discuss any dietary requirements.

The Verdict

Shining Pandas suits families seeking term-time nursery days with flexible hours and an afternoon extension, as well as holiday-club Half day and Extended day sessions. Stay N Play adds an early opportunity for shared play and familiarity. The May 2024 examples give substance to the learning offer, from movement challenges to puzzles and picture-making, while the teaching priorities provide a useful test for a visit. Holiday coverage needs careful planning around the three excluded half terms.
