A mud kitchen, sandpit and climbing frame give Toye Box Early Years Centre a clear outdoor identity. This purpose-built preschool in Aldershot predominantly serves military families, with children from non-service families also attending. Its enclosed outdoor space is used in wet weather as well as sunshine, making outdoor play part of the offer rather than an occasional extra.
The centre has capacity for 66 children aged two to five. At its February 2022 inspection, Ofsted judged it Good overall, found safeguarding effective and reported good learning progress, including for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities. Those findings provide a dated assessment of the provision, rather than a description of every aspect of today's practice.
Attendance is term-time, with morning, afternoon and all-day patterns. The practical distinction is important: this is preschool provision organised around the school year.
Four rooms divide the provision by age: one accommodates children aged two to three, while the other three serve children from three to school age. That gives younger children their own room rather than placing the entire age range together. The building was purpose-built for early years use.
Individual planning works through a keyworker system, so children's different starting points inform their learning. Free flow play gives children choices, with adults supporting their play rather than directing every activity.
The Early Years Foundation Stage provides the framework for learning and care, with play and individual planning helping children develop their skills. Here, the keyworker arrangement connects that framework to each child's needs: planning is intended to follow the child, rather than treating age alone as the guide.
In February 2022, activities included biscuit-making, construction and creative work. Stories used puppets and props, while singing provided another route into language. These examples show how practical activity, listening and imaginative play shared the day. Toddlers also explored interactive lights, watching changing patterns and listening for sounds.
Other February 2022 experiences were deliberately sensory. Children worked with dough containing lentils and made bracelets from cereal. The appeal was in handling and investigating materials, giving children something concrete to explore alongside conversation with adults.
The enclosed outdoor area combines a garden area and sunshade with the sandpit, climbing frame and mud kitchen. These spaces support different kinds of play: digging and handling materials, climbing, and imaginative activity. Access continues across different weather conditions.
In February 2022, children practised balancing and climbing outdoors, and staff reminded those using bikes to wear helmets. Physical challenge came with clear safety boundaries. Activities also introduced celebrations and faiths, and children were encouraged to use words from their home languages, allowing others to hear unfamiliar words during the day.
A keyworker provides the link between individual planning and knowledge of the child. Parents are treated as partners in that process, with staff working towards a shared understanding of children's needs. For families, the value is continuity: information from home can help shape what happens at preschool.
In February 2022, staff exchanged updates with parents and gathered information to connect care and learning between home and the setting. Children received reminders about boundaries and encouragement for sharing, helping and kindness. Support for everyday independence included learning to open food packaging and pour drinks.
All practitioners hold paediatric first aid certificates. This is a concrete care arrangement, separate from the dated safeguarding judgement. The keyworker system also provides a mechanism for adapting planning to individual needs, rather than a blanket assurance about support.
The February 2022 inspection identified two improvements: staff needed to improve mealtime routines because some children moved around and played with toys while eating, and to allow children longer to think before answering questions. Both points matter in ordinary moments of the day. One concerns safe eating; the other concerns whether children have enough space to formulate their own responses.
In February 2022, children brought lunches from home and learnt handwashing before eating. These arrangements belong to that period; the useful lesson from the findings is to pay attention to how independence and supervision work together at mealtimes.
The address is Maurice Toye House, 27 Middle Hill, Aldershot, GU11 1PL. Opening hours are 8.30am to 3pm during school terms, and an all-day attendance pattern uses that same window.
Morning attendance can include lunch and finish at noon. Afternoon attendance runs from noon to 3pm, with an earlier 11.30am start for children staying for lunch. The lunch period falls between 11.30am and noon. These options make the lunch boundary an important part of choosing a session, rather than simply choosing morning or afternoon.

During preschool hours, access is through the main playground. The car park immediately in front of Toye Box is reserved for AWS staff; parents and visitors use the car park farther down the hill.
In February 2022, the preschool received early education funding for children aged two, three and four. That establishes its funding participation at the time of that assessment, rather than promising a current entitlement or particular funded attendance pattern.
Toye Box suits families seeking either shorter morning or afternoon attendance, or an all-day preschool pattern within school terms. Its military-community setting, age-separated rooms and enclosed outdoor area give it a recognisable character, while keyworker planning provides a practical route to knowing each child.
The February 2022 assessment was positive overall but included useful cautions about eating routines and conversational pace. Those everyday details deserve attention alongside the larger outdoor features when deciding whether the centre fits a child's needs.
Ofsted rated the centre Good at its inspection on 15 February 2022. Safeguarding was effective, with improvements needed in mealtime organisation and allowing children time to answer questions.
The centre accepts children aged two to five. It has one room for two-to-three-year-olds and three rooms for children aged three to school age.
