Ab Day Nursery

At a Glance

Warm relationships and uneven teaching define the choice at Ab Day Nursery in Swanley. At its February 2026 inspection, Ofsted judged achievement, inclusion, leadership and children's welfare to meet the expected standard, with safeguarding standards met, but curriculum and teaching, and behaviour, attitudes and routines needing attention.

The nursery has 28 places in total. The strengths and concerns need weighing together: individual support sits alongside a clear requirement to make teaching and daily routines more consistent.

The Nursery Experience

In February 2026, learning emphasised communication and children's social and emotional development. The early years foundation stage provides the framework for children's learning, development and care; here, examples included exploring shapes through construction play and developing coordination through ball games.

Babies practised throwing balls towards hoops, while adults introduced words about size as children fitted blocks into a train. Older children acted out emergency-service roles and used pretend kitchen equipment. These activities gave children opportunities to practise movement, language and familiar social situations.

The garden and outings into the neighbourhood extended physical activity beyond indoor play. Visits to shops introduced healthy food choices and safety outside the nursery. Parents shared Diwali customs, and cultural days brought items from home into children's learning.

There was a significant limitation. In February 2026, older children sometimes stayed with activities they already understood while adults concentrated on observation and routine jobs. Scheduled circle time also interrupted absorbed play, reducing engagement rather than extending it.

Care and Support

At the February 2026 inspection, Ofsted found that SEND support identified needs promptly and used effective targeted strategies, although inconsistent teaching meant these children did not receive equally strong interactions throughout the day.

In February 2026, parents' information, starting assessments and continuing observations informed individual support. Staff worked with families and professionals on referrals, reviewed interventions and adjusted them. Tents purchased using additional funding gave children a quiet retreat for regulating their emotions.

Key-person relationships and settling arrangements drew on information gathered before children started. Babies settled readily for sleep and ate alongside older children, giving them opportunities to copy familiar routines. In February 2026, uneven routines also left gaps in support for children's wellbeing during the day. Staff helped children name feelings and practise independence, including cleaning their hands after meals.

School preparation included contact with children's future schools, planned visits and opportunities for teachers to meet children at the nursery. In February 2026, this helped children become familiar with the adults they would meet next.

Practical Information

Ab Day Nursery is at 21 Station Road, Swanley, BR8 8ES. In February 2026, opening hours were 7am to 6.30pm, Monday to Saturday, and the children attending were aged one to four. Those ages describe the children present at that time.

Things to Consider

  • Older children's learning. February 2026 observations showed periods of limited challenge and adult interaction. On a visit, ask how practitioners now extend play beyond activities children have already mastered.
  • Routines and action deadlines. The February 2026 action plan required more consistent teaching and routines that protected engagement, with a deadline of 3 March 2026. Leaders had recognised weaknesses and started addressing them, but this work was still new and its effect was not yet established. Ask what changes followed and how their impact is assessed.
  • Attendance arrangements. Saturday opening formed part of the February 2026 timetable. Ask which booking patterns and age groups the nursery currently accepts before planning attendance.

The Verdict

Ab Day Nursery merits consideration for families who value close key-person relationships and an individual approach to additional needs. Its February 2026 examples of practical language work, family involvement and school preparation give substance to that appeal. The deciding issue is consistency, especially for older children: families should weigh the care arrangements alongside the required changes to teaching and routines.
