Broughton Cottage Day Nursery

At a Glance

A house backing onto farmland, a separate sleep room for babies and woodland learning for older children give Broughton Cottage Day Nursery its character. The Dunton Green setting combines domestic surroundings with opportunities to get muddy, make things and explore outdoors. Those are the details that distinguish the nursery day here.

At its December 2021 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Good and judged safeguarding effective. That assessment is dated: it offers a useful account of practice at the time, rather than a fresh judgement on today's provision. The nursery accepts children from three months and has 52 places in total.

The rooms follow a progression from Acorns to Seedlings, Saplings and Oaks. Their activities change with children's development, from sensory exploration to storytelling, potty training and preparation for school. For parents, this gives a concrete picture of how the day changes as a child grows.

The Nursery Experience

Rooms and Ages

Acorns caters for the youngest children, with a room age band extending to 18 months, sensory and messy activities, and a separate sleep room that gives rest its own space away from play.

Seedlings, labelled rising two to two-and-a-half years, combines imaginative role play, singing and dancing with an outdoor mud kitchen, giving children different ways to explore movement, language and make-believe.

For Saplings, aged two-and-a-half to three years, stories develop communication while puzzles and craft activities exercise concentration; potty training is coordinated with what families are doing at home.

Oaks, for three- to four-year-olds, brings together Forest School experiences and pencil handling, linking practical outdoor challenges with the personal, social and physical skills needed for school.

The sequence matters more than the room names alone. A baby has space to sleep, a mobile toddler has opportunities to experiment, and an older child practises tasks requiring greater independence. These are different emphases for different stages, rather than one activity menu applied throughout the house.

Learning and Activities

The early years foundation stage is the statutory framework for children's learning, development and care: in daily life, that means learning through play while developing communication, relationships and physical skills. Forest School adds outdoor, hands-on experiences alongside that framework, with the Oaks room using them to practise cooperation and problem-solving.

In December 2021, woodland activities included searching for natural objects, preparing food over fires and trying tools under staff guidance. Children also used found sticks while making dough. These examples show why outdoor learning here involves more than running around: materials and tasks give children something to investigate, discuss and work on together.

The December 2021 inspection identified two improvements: clearer learning purposes in some rooms, especially for the youngest children, and interactions that allowed children longer to think before answering. Those points matter alongside the Good judgement. Busy activities alone do not tell a parent whether an individual child's learning is being extended.

Outdoor and Community Life

The house's position beside farmland makes outdoor surroundings part of the setting's identity. Woodland experiences sit alongside the younger rooms' sensory activities and the Seedlings' mud kitchen, so outdoor play is not confined to preschool preparation.

In March 2024, children at Forest School investigated damaged bird houses, discussed replacement materials and worked together on a decorated totem pole. That same month's activities included making vehicles from recycled containers and matching vehicle sounds. These dated examples connect practical construction with conversation and problem-solving; they describe past experiences rather than a fixed current timetable.

Care and Support

Relationships and Communication

In December 2021, babies and younger children turned to staff for comfort when separating from their parents. Practitioners gathered information about children's starting points and knew their preferences and abilities. For a family beginning childcare, the useful detail is that personal knowledge supported the relationship, rather than settling being treated simply as getting through the first morning.

Parent questionnaires had also led to parents' evenings by December 2021. That is a concrete example of feedback changing communication arrangements. It gives parents a useful subject to explore when discussing how they will hear about their own child's experiences and development.

Inclusion and Wellbeing

Sleep has a dedicated space in Acorns. For older children, everyday independence is built into the room descriptions: Saplings works on potty training with families, while Oaks develops pencil control and social readiness for school. The nursery also plans to invite a primary school teacher to speak with parents about school readiness and ways to support it at home.

In December 2021, children ate home-cooked meals adapted to their dietary needs and preferences; mealtimes included practising pouring drinks and handling cutlery. Food was therefore also an opportunity to develop independence. That is a historical account of meals and care, rather than a statement of current catering terms.

Funding and Paid Extras

Things to Consider

  • Purpose behind the activities. The December 2021 improvement points concerned learning intentions and children's thinking time. During a visit, ask how an Acorns activity is adapted to an individual baby and how practitioners give children space to respond.
  • Woodland participation. Forest School is part of the Oaks experience. Ask how participation is organised for your child, including clothing, outdoor routines and the balance with time in the nursery.
  • The care agreement. Before committing, request a written quotation covering your intended attendance, funded hours where relevant, meals and non-food consumables. Consider the annual closure pattern alongside it.

The Verdict

Broughton Cottage suits families looking for a house-based nursery with outdoor exploration and a clear progression through age-related rooms. The separate sleep room, toddler mud kitchen and Oaks' woodland experiences give parents tangible reasons to consider it.

The December 2021 Good judgement provides a positive historical assessment, with meaningful curriculum and interaction improvements to weigh alongside it. The strongest choice will be for families whose working routines fit the opening hours and who value both practical outdoor learning and preparation for growing independence.
