Sunflowers, pond dipping and learning that continued at home give Darnall Community Nursery a recognisable character in its June 2023 account. Ofsted rated the nursery Outstanding at its 7 June 2023 inspection. The strongest detail is the connection between practical exploration, communication and preparation for starting nursery.
The Sheffield setting has capacity for 42 children and accepts ages from 3 to 60 months. Those whole-nursery figures are separate from the arrangements described in June 2023.
In June 2023, learning followed the early years foundation stage, the framework for children's learning, care and development: practical play helped children build language, understanding and independence. Growing sunflowers became an opportunity to measure their height with tape measures. Connect packs supplied materials and instructions for continuing the sunflower activity at home, linking nursery exploration with family involvement.
Outdoor provision in June 2023 included secure smaller spaces for growing produce and pond dipping. A nurture area supported confidence, social interaction and managing feelings. These spaces gave outdoor play different purposes, from investigating living things to practising relationships.
Conversation grew from children's interests. In June 2023, a missing piece of fence prompted children to propose explanations, including squirrels and ants. Daily stories and bedtime reading packs brought books into nursery and home routines. Predictable routines also helped children practise independence and understand expectations.
At its June 2023 inspection, Ofsted found safeguarding effective and described targeted support for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), alongside progress suited to children's capabilities. In June 2023, SEND provision included a dedicated area, intensive individual support, plans addressing specific needs and collaboration with other professionals.
Before children started in June 2023, staff visited every child's home and invited children and their parents or carers to Ready, steady, go, a pre-start group. That gave staff an opportunity to understand children's experiences and begin relationships before separation became part of the day.
Communication support in June 2023 used visual aids, repeated simple vocabulary and words linked to objects, including for children learning English as an additional language. Staff exchanged information with families and professionals, while interactive activities developed listening and attention. Accident reviews looked for recurring patterns, and online safety guidance involved both children and parents.
Funding secured by June 2023 enabled free meals during attendance; children also tasted fruit and vegetables they had grown. Management reviewed staff practice, with committee involvement in overseeing the nursery, and welcomed practitioners from other settings to observe its work.
Darnall Community Nursery is at Darnall Childrens Centre, 563 Staniforth Road, Sheffield, S9 4RA. Opening hours are 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, throughout the year, with bank holiday closures.
In June 2023, session times ran from 8am until 6pm, and funded early education served children aged two, three and four. These describe the arrangements at that date.
Darnall merits consideration for families who value practical outdoor learning and close links between nursery and home.
