Woodland exploration and farm life give Woodlands Pre-School Nursery its character: in February 2023, children searched for insects, explored their habitats and helped feed lambs. These were hands-on opportunities to investigate living things and practise caring for them.
Ofsted rated the nursery Outstanding on 3 February 2023, finding sustained progress across learning and strong preparation for starting school. Woodlands is on Myers Grove Lane in Stannington, Sheffield, S6 5LA, with capacity for 45 children aged 6 to 60 months.
The early years foundation stage sets the framework for children's learning, development and care, bringing these together rather than treating education as separate from everyday routines.
In February 2023, vocabulary was deliberately connected to children's interests and experiences. Modelling activities introduced language about materials, while learning about butterflies brought new words into discussions of their development. Children encountered words in different situations, giving them opportunities to use what they had learnt.
Books, rhymes and songs also shaped the day that February. Stories and questions introduced internet safety, while songs helped children concentrate and cooperate. The golden rules gave social expectations a recognisable form, supported by staff demonstrating considerate behaviour.
Outdoor activity had physical challenge as well as discovery. In February 2023, children practised using a rope swing together and developed balance and climbing skills on trees and a wooden climbing structure. Learning to judge risk was part of the activity, alongside movement and coordination.
At the February 2023 inspection, Ofsted found safeguarding effective and identified prompt responses to developmental gaps, with precise learning plans, collaboration with other early-years professionals and purposeful use of additional funding. These findings address both protection and how children received extra help.
In February 2023, babies formed close relationships with staff and gained confidence to explore tactile surroundings. Families received frequent progress information and ideas for learning at home; Woody Bear visits supported toilet training, and a lending library gave parents books to share with their children. The practical connection between nursery and home mattered here.
That February, meals supported healthy eating, and staff helped children practise handwashing and tooth care. Parents also took part through stay-and-play days and charity events, providing opportunities to share nursery life rather than relying entirely on progress updates.
