Crowgate Child Centre

At a Glance

A mud kitchen, herbs for pretend cakes and a small hill for scooters give Crowgate Child Centre's September 2022 account a recognisable outdoor character. Children could choose their activities and explore both indoors and outside. That freedom gave them opportunities to practise independence as well as physical skills.

Ofsted rated the setting Good at its 14 September 2022 inspection and judged safeguarding effective, while identifying weaknesses in how activities challenged individual children and how supervision addressed staff training needs.

At Oak Meadow in Bishops Castle (SY9 5PA), Crowgate operates within Bishops Castle Children's Centre and has capacity for 26 children aged 24 to 60 months.

The Nursery Experience

The early years foundation stage sets the requirements for children's learning, development and care: play supports learning alongside children's everyday care needs.

In September 2022, outdoor play included bicycles, scooters and a slide, with the sandpit and mud kitchen providing opportunities for smaller hand movements. Pushing scooters uphill added physical effort to the fun. Indoors, shaping play dough and pretend baking gave children further opportunities to practise handling materials.

Language ran through the September 2022 activities. Staff talked about children's play, encouraged songs and action games, and made stories engaging through expressive reading. Children joined conversations with adults and one another.

There was a clear limitation. In September 2022, activities did not consistently have a sufficiently clear purpose or connect closely enough to each child's next learning steps. Enjoyment and choice therefore needed a more deliberate level of challenge.

Care and Support

At the September 2022 inspection, Ofsted found that the key-person arrangements supported children's emotional security, parent partnership was good, and staff helped children manage feelings through play.

In September 2022, staff offered comfort when children needed it and used dinosaur play to help children work through feeling frightened. Adults used the dinosaurs to model playing together and looking after each other. Praise, routines and clear expectations also helped children learn to share and play together.

Communication in September 2022 included daily spoken updates and termly progress reports. Staff gathered children's starting points through conversations with parents and observed their interests during the day. Those exchanges gave families both immediate news and a longer view of development.

Children brought packed lunches in September 2022; healthy snacks and water were provided, and staff ate alongside them. Handwashing formed part of learning about health.

Staff supervision needed attention in September 2022. Meetings did not sufficiently identify individual training needs, limiting how effectively professional development strengthened practice.

Practical Information

Opening hours are 8am to 4pm on Monday, 8am to 6pm on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, and 8am to 5pm on Friday. The setting operates across the year, closing on bank holidays and on Mondays and Fridays during school holidays.

In September 2022, funded early education was provided for two-, three- and four-year-olds. This is a dated participation statement rather than a guarantee of a funded place today.

Things to Consider

  • Learning challenge. September 2022 activities did not always stretch children sufficiently. On a visit, ask how an activity is adapted to your child's next learning step.
  • Staff development. September 2022 supervision needed to identify individual training needs more effectively. Ask how supervision now leads to specific changes in practice.
  • Holiday attendance. Monday and Friday closures during school holidays matter for families needing care throughout the working week.

The Verdict

Crowgate suits families whose care needs fit its weekday opening hours and reduced holiday-week pattern. Its September 2022 account combines outdoor exploration, language-rich play and supportive relationships, balanced against the need for sharper learning intentions and more purposeful staff development.
