Jack in the Box Nursery

At a Glance

A wooden boat overlooking the street, a calming sensory area and toothbrushing after lunch give Jack in the Box Nursery a recognisable character in its January 2022 account of daily life. This Slough setting is based at Upton Hospital, on Albert Street, and has capacity for 78 children aged 10 to 60 months.

At its 25 January 2022 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Good and judged safeguarding effective, while requiring more consistent activity resources and support for children learning to share. Those improvement points matter alongside the positive judgement. They concern the everyday details that determine whether an enjoyable activity develops into sustained play, and whether toddlers receive dependable help with disagreements.

The Nursery Experience

Learning and Activities

The early years foundation stage sets the requirements for children's learning, development and care here: in parent language, education and everyday care belong together. The January 2022 day illustrated that connection through sensory exploration for babies, play shaped around toddlers' interests and letter-sound activities for preschool children.

In January 2022, babies explored paint and ice and spent time in a sensory area. These offered different kinds of experience, from investigating unfamiliar textures to spending time in a calmer space. Toddlers played with resources reflecting what interested them. Older children identified objects linked to a letter sound and contributed words of their own, connecting early literacy with conversation rather than simply repeating sounds.

Planning also had a clear limitation in January 2022. Staff selected activities around children's interests and assessed what they needed to learn next, but resources did not consistently give children enough scope to extend their play. For parents, the useful distinction is between an appealing activity idea and the equipment needed to make it work.

Outdoor and Community Life

In January 2022, babies went outdoors regularly into an area equipped for their age, while older children could use their outdoor areas throughout the day. Football, wheeled toys and balancing on stilts brought different kinds of movement into the nursery day. Outdoor play had substance beyond a break from indoor activities.

The wooden boat was another January 2022 feature. Children climbed onto it and watched passing vehicles beyond the nursery, giving staff and children something immediate to discuss. Skittles added shared play with adults. Together, these examples show how physical activity and conversation could develop in the same outdoor space.

Care and Support

Relationships and Communication

At the January 2022 inspection, Ofsted found effective key-person relationships, good support for communication, including children needing additional speech support, and strong partnerships with parents. Staff used signs with younger children and targeted activities for children learning English as an additional language. These were concrete ways of helping children participate and communicate.

In January 2022, staff prepared toddlers gently for nappy changes and fitted these routines around play rather than interrupting group activities. Parents received regular updates about care and learning, creating opportunities to continue children's learning at home. Staff themselves had supervision and training, including annual basic life support sessions covering choking and resuscitation.

Inclusion and Wellbeing

Health routines were tangible in January 2022. The snuffle station gave children a place to wipe their noses independently, and toothbrushing after lunch brought dental care into an activity children could understand. Older children could explain why brushing mattered. This made health education part of ordinary routines.

Help with sharing was less consistent in January 2022. Staff had agreed strategies, including a sand timer for taking turns, but did not reliably put them into practice. The concern was consistency: children needed the same practical support when disagreements arose, rather than a strategy that depended on the occasion.

Practical Information

Sessions and Attendance

Opening hours are 7.30am to 6pm, Monday to Friday. The nursery operates across the year, closing for bank holidays and from 25 December to 2 January. That holiday break needs to fit the family's care arrangements even where weekday opening hours suit working schedules.

Getting There

The address is Upton Hospital, Albert Street, Slough, SL1 2BJ. Enquiries can be made by telephone on 01189 044 636.

Funding and Paid Extras

In January 2022, the nursery received funding for early education for children aged two, three and four. That describes participation at that date, rather than a present-day entitlement or attendance agreement. Current prices belong in the nursery's written quotation.

Things to Consider

  • Resources for play. In January 2022, activities were not consistently equipped to extend children's learning. During a visit, ask how staff prepare resources for both planned activities and ideas that emerge during play.
  • Support with sharing. January 2022 practice did not consistently apply agreed strategies for resolving disagreements. Ask staff to explain how they now use turn-taking resources and support toddlers when they want the same toy.
  • Funding and everyday costs. What would your proposed attendance agreement include for funded hours, meals and non-food consumables? Establish the complete arrangement before committing.
  • Holiday cover. The bank-holiday closures and Christmas break affect year-round care. Plan alternative arrangements around those dates.

The Verdict

Jack in the Box suits families seeking weekday care in Slough whose schedules fit its opening hours and holiday closures. The January 2022 picture has appealing detail: sensory exploration for babies, outdoor movement and practical health routines. It also has clear reservations about activity resources and consistent help with sharing. Those are useful subjects for a visit, alongside the nursery's current attendance agreement.
