Penn Road Children's Centre Early Years Service

At a Glance

In December 2024, a coat trick, lunchtime responsibilities and a garden investigation illustrated Penn Road's character: children practised doing things for themselves while learning alongside others. At its December 2024 inspection, Ofsted judged the provision Good, with effective safeguarding and an educational programme that supported children's learning.

Penn Road Children's Centre Early Years Service has capacity for 100 children aged 3 to 60 months, in Slough. The strongest examples from December 2024 concern independence, books and cooperation; the improvement priorities concern precise language support and the timing of adult involvement in play.

The Nursery Experience

The early years foundation stage sets the framework for children's learning, development and care, connecting everyday play with the skills children need to develop. In December 2024, activities gave children practical opportunities to investigate, talk and solve problems together. Older children tested ways to retrieve floating toys from a narrow water-filled cylinder, listening to one another's ideas rather than working alone.

Books also gave learning a clear thread that month. Repeated stories introduced language children could use themselves, while retelling helped them understand sequence and changing characters' feelings. In the garden, comparing slugs with snails turned a small discovery into a conversation about similarities and differences.

December 2024 brought daily outdoor activity, energetic exercise and opportunities to grow fruit and vegetables. Indoor and outdoor spaces were organised for different age groups. These experiences connected physical activity and curiosity with practical learning about health.

Care and Support

In December 2024, staff collected detailed information from families to help children settle and checked their comfort regularly. Independence ran through ordinary routines: children practised feeding themselves, putting on coats and helping at lunchtime. Those small responsibilities gave them a useful part in the day.

Emotional learning that month included the colour monster story, used to discuss feeling happy, sad or angry. Younger children had visual prompts; older children received fuller explanations about how their actions affected others. Daily updates through an online application included photographs and videos, giving families material to discuss with their children.

Practical Information

The setting is on Penn Road, Slough, SL2 1PG. Opening hours are 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, across the year, with closures on bank holidays and for one week at Christmas.

In December 2024, the setting received funding for early education for children aged two, three and four, and was eligible to receive it from nine months. This is a dated funding position rather than a guarantee of an individual child's entitlement.

Things to Consider

  • Targeted language support. In December 2024, some interventions lacked sufficiently precise teaching and a clear progression from each child's existing language knowledge. How is support now planned and reviewed for a child with emerging communication gaps?
  • Space to pursue play. Adult involvement sometimes interrupted children's concentration in December 2024. Ask during a visit how practitioners decide when to extend an investigation and when to let it continue.
  • Attendance and costs. The opening window spans the working day and the year includes a Christmas closure. Which booking pattern and written quotation would fit your family's routine, including funded hours, meals and consumables?

The Verdict

Penn Road suits families who value practical independence, shared stories and learning through investigation, with an opening window that covers the working day. The December 2024 picture has concrete strengths: children cooperating over a problem, taking responsibility and discussing emotions. More consistent language teaching and better timing of adult interventions are the points to weigh alongside those strengths.
