Outdoor space belongs to every age group at King Edward Road Nursery: babies and toddlers each have their own outdoor area, while preschool children can use a garden, a school field and climbing equipment. That gives this Minehead nursery a clear practical attraction for families who want play to extend beyond the room.
The nursery has capacity for 40 children, with an overall age range from birth to five. Three named rooms organise the day around different stages of development, rather than placing babies and preschool children in the same play space.
At its July 2024 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Good, judged safeguarding effective and found that children needing additional support were considered in curriculum planning. The improvement priorities concerned the length and organisation of group activities, consistent use of communication strategies and helping older children understand expectations for behaviour. These are useful points to weigh alongside the outdoor provision and parent communication.
Tiddler room, for children aged 0 to 2, combines space for exploration with a soft play corner, black-and-white area, mark-making resources, its own outdoor space and a cosy sleep area, giving babies places for both activity and rest.
Caterpillar room, for ages 2 to 3, brings together sensory play, books, role play and small-world resources, with direct outdoor access to a reading den, construction space and mud kitchen, so play can move between indoor resources and outdoor exploration.
Gruffalo room, for children aged 3 and over and preschool children, includes writing and construction areas alongside an indoor sand pit, with access to the front garden for water play, a reading den and a mud kitchen, giving older children scope to develop their own play ideas.
The progression is tangible. Babies have a space suited to their pace, while older children have resources for building, pretending, reading and making marks. The room descriptions connect those activities to the spaces children actually use.
The early years foundation stage provides the framework for children's learning, development and care: here, play, stories, exploration and everyday routines form the substance of the nursery day. It is the shared early-years framework, rather than an extra programme unique to this nursery.
In July 2024, toddlers explored sand by concealing a toy train and making patterns, while older children collaborated on car ramps made from large blocks. These examples give a concrete picture of children experimenting with materials and working through problems together. Adults used questions and prompts when the building did not work as intended.
Books also supported conversations about feelings in July 2024. Older children used The Colour Monster to explore emotions and represented them through facial expressions. Younger children discussed what frightened them and possible responses, including seeking a parent's help. Story time therefore had a purpose beyond listening to a book.
Group activities were less consistent at that visit. Children initially joined in with a song bag and duck pictures, but prolonged sitting reduced their interest in the following story. Older children's participation also suffered when behavioural expectations and non-verbal prompts were not used consistently. The concern was about how adults organised shared learning, rather than a lack of play resources.
All three rooms can use the field at Minehead middle school, extending the space for running and exploration beyond their own outdoor areas. Preschool children also have access to climbing equipment and the Forest school area at Minehead First school. This is access to an outdoor area; the practical attraction is the additional space and equipment available to older children.
Familiar relationships matter here. Children belong to key families, and Famly provides an online journal through which parents can contribute to their child's nursery life. Families can also message a room directly, giving communication a route to the staff working with their child.
Each week, parents receive the planned rhyme, book or theme through Famly, together with activities and links for home. This makes it possible to pick up a familiar story or rhyme outside nursery rather than treating learning at home as a separate project.
In July 2024, familiar key people helped children settle, and staff adjusted activities to accommodate quieter moments. Older children shared sensory cards with adults who knew them, providing an alternative to busier group experiences. These examples make individual attention easier to understand than a general promise of personalised care.
An Early Years SENCO role sits within the team structure. There are also designated safeguarding lead responsibilities at manager level and deputy safeguarding responsibilities within the baby and 2-3 room leadership. These roles give families identifiable points of responsibility for discussing support and concerns; the safeguarding judgement remains the dated inspection finding above.
The nursery opens Monday to Friday from 8am to 6pm throughout the year, with closures at Easter and Christmas and three inset days. For families organising work and childcare, those planned breaks matter as much as the daily opening window.

King Edward Road Nursery suits families who value age-specific play spaces, outdoor access and a regular connection between nursery activities and home. Tiddler, Caterpillar and Gruffalo offer a clear progression, while the school field and preschool climbing equipment broaden the physical setting. The July 2024 Good judgement is balanced by specific concerns about group learning and communication strategies. Those questions deserve attention when weighing the nursery's spaces and relationships against your child's needs.
