The account of daily life below dates to September 2023. Nature supplied opportunities for conversation, practical discovery and learning to take care of living things.
In September 2023, children gathered blackberries for a smoothie, consulting a list as they searched. Beside the lake, binoculars helped them watch swans; their excitement became conversation, gestures and animal sounds. These were concrete reasons to use new words.
The early years foundation stage brings learning, development and care together: here, the September 2023 examples included talking during exploration, choosing songs and practising physical skills through play. Babies tried to get hand puppets onto their fingers, while older children selected painting tools and squeezed paint into trays.
Outdoor play also involved judgement. In September 2023, children recognised that a painted safety mat had become slippery and took it off the climbing frame. Large blocks and planks required careful handling when tidying away. These examples connected physical play with responsibility.
In September 2023, Ofsted found that familiar key people and planned moves between the baby room and pre-school room helped children feel secure, with parents involved in reviewing their needs. Relationships mattered alongside the outdoor activity.
Daily care in September 2023 included regular nappy changes, help with potties and handwashing, and encouragement to manage small tasks independently. Older babies attempted their chair harnesses; older children put on boots for outdoor play. Staff also responded to babies’ sounds and talked through what they were doing.
Safety had a practical expression that September: children helped choose where blue ribbons should mark stopping points around the farm grounds. Staff used procedures for sun protection and collection, alongside child protection training.
