Mama Bear's Day Nursery & Pre-School, Yeovil

At a Glance

Bamboo pipes, flowing water and a stubborn toy duck give a concrete picture of learning at this Yeovil nursery: in July 2024, preschool children tested how objects moved, adjusted their equipment and kept trying when their arrangements fell apart. Practical exploration gave children something to think through for themselves.

Mama Bear's Day Nursery & Pre-School, Yeovil has capacity for 68 children, accepting ages from three months to five years, at The Old School on Houndstone Close. At its July 2024 inspection, Ofsted rated the provision Good overall and identified a need to strengthen younger children's mathematical language and older children's understanding of unfamiliar vocabulary.

The opening window runs from 6.30am to 7pm on weekdays, across the year apart from bank holidays. For parents, that is a useful practical starting point alongside the nursery's approach to communication, independence and care.

The Nursery Experience

Learning and Activities

The early years foundation stage sets the requirements for children's learning, development and care: everyday play supports skills such as communication, movement and growing independence. At this nursery, the July 2024 activities included physical exploration for babies, creative work for toddlers and practical experiments for preschool children.

In July 2024, adults supported babies in standing so that they could reach materials on tables, while toddlers used a small slide and collected leaves for pictures. These examples show learning at different stages: reaching and moving for the youngest children, then combining movement with making something.

Preschool children explored water movement using containers and bamboo pipes. Changing the angle of the pipes affected the flow; comparing balls with a toy duck gave them another problem to solve. The activity involved testing ideas and responding to what happened.

During that same month, older children recalled how to combine paints to make secondary colours and painted shapes with cotton buds, practising the finger movements used to grip small objects. Teachers' feedback had also informed opportunities to concentrate during activities led by adults. Preparation for school therefore included sustained attention as well as practical skills.

Outdoor and Community Life

In July 2024, children went outside daily and took part in energetic play. Staff encouraged drinking water, using shade in hot weather and wearing hats and sunscreen. Outdoor time was linked with learning how to look after themselves.

Books also supplied topics for conversation that month, including farms for younger children and sea creatures for older children. Pictures, signs and changes in adults' tone supported communication. The improvement priority was specific: children needed more help to hear mathematical vocabulary and understand new words, so activity choice alone was not the whole answer.

Care and Support

Relationships and Communication

In July 2024, staff discussed babies' routines with parents and used that knowledge in their care. Families had online records alongside opportunities for longer conversations, and could use song sheets, videos, books and a play-dough recipe to continue activities at home. This gave parents practical ways to connect nursery experiences with family life.

At the July 2024 inspection, Ofsted found safeguarding effective, recognised strong parent partnerships and judged that the special educational needs coordinator's work helped staff plan support so children with SEND made good progress. The coordinator sought additional assistance and directed funding towards children's needs.

Inclusion and Wellbeing

Daily routines provided opportunities to practise consideration for others in July 2024. Older babies handed drinks to friends, adults helped children work through disagreements, and children received a warning before tidying began. These were small, concrete ways to practise sharing and cope with changes in activity.

Hygiene was taught through action that month: staff demonstrated handwashing to toddlers, while children learning to use the toilet practised washing afterwards and disposing of paper towels. Dietary care also received management attention, with procedures reviewed, staff retrained and the manager supervising toddler meals because children sometimes took one another's food.

Things to Consider

  • Language development. The July 2024 improvement priority concerned mathematical words for younger children and understanding new vocabulary for older ones. On a visit, ask for examples of how adults now develop those skills during play.
  • Dietary care. In July 2024, toddler mealtimes required additional supervision because children sometimes ate each other's food. Families managing allergies or dietary restrictions should discuss how their child's meals will be handled.
  • Attendance and costs. The weekday opening window spans 6.30am to 7pm. Ask which booking pattern fits your routine and request a written breakdown covering funded hours, private hours, meals and consumables.

The Verdict

This nursery suits families seeking childcare across the year who value practical exploration and detailed conversations about their child's development. The July 2024 examples make that appeal tangible: water experiments, painting and resources for learning at home. Language development deserves attention when choosing, especially the difference between introducing a word and helping a child understand it.
