Pebbles Room, Seashells and a learning journal shared with home give Octopus Children's Daycare a clear shape: younger children begin in their own room, older children move on, and families can follow their learning between conversations with staff. Based on the Burnham Infant School site in Burnham on Sea, this is term-time childcare with practical links between nursery routines and the next stage of childhood.
At its November 2024 inspection, Ofsted rated the provision Good, found safeguarding effective and praised the support that helped children feel secure and develop their communication. There is capacity for 28 children in total. Daycare accepts children from age 2, with rooms serving children aged 2 to 4, alongside before-school and after-school provision.
The strongest practical feature is continuity. A key person plans around each child's interests, records their learning and works with a colleague who can support the family when that key person is away.
Pebbles Room serves children aged 2 to 3, while Seashells serves those aged 3 to 4. Moving between them brings a change of key person, making the room transition something families should understand as well as the age bands.
In Seashells, children and their key workers help arrange and tidy a shared key-group area; Pebbles children have individual named drawers for their belongings. These are small, concrete ways of giving children a place within the wider room. The nursery day also includes choosing resources, group activities and opportunities to play both indoors and outside.
The Early Years Foundation Stage provides the framework for learning through play, combining children's own choices with activities supported by adults. Here, quiet periods, energetic movement and key-group activities give the day different rhythms. Children have time to pursue their own ideas as well as practise something their key person has planned around their interests or next steps.
Topics change each half term and can grow from a celebration, a local event or something that has caught children's attention. That gives activities a shared thread while retaining room for individual choices. Afternoon play includes work with letters and sounds; after-school activities can include cooking and football.
In November 2024, dinosaurs provided a starting point for mathematical ideas and new vocabulary. Storytelling involved props and acting out characters, while dough and broad scarf movements gave older children opportunities to practise hand and arm movements. These examples show the substance behind the curriculum: talk, movement and imaginative play were connected rather than treated as separate tasks.
Outdoor play continues in different weather, so suitable clothing matters. Spare clothes are sensible for messy activities indoors too. In November 2024, staff used the outdoor space for learning across the curriculum, including for children who preferred being outside. Outdoor time was part of the learning day, rather than simply a break from it.
Borrowable library books extend reading into family life. Children have book bags for carrying books, pictures and correspondence, giving parents a practical connection with what happens during the day.
The key person gathers information about a child during induction and remains the family's main contact. A paired colleague provides another familiar point of contact when that practitioner is off duty. This matters for children whose attendance does not always coincide with their key person's working pattern.
Tapestry is the online learning journal used to share observations and assessments with families. The Learning Journey brings those observations together into a report twice a year, with an invitation to discuss it. Parents can also contribute photographs and information about learning at home, so communication can travel in both directions.
When a child starts school, their Learning Journey is passed to the new school. This gives the receiving staff information about the child's learning. Attending the nursery does not guarantee a Reception place.
Induction provides an opportunity to explain a child's needs and requirements. A familiar toy can accompany a child during their early days if it helps them settle. Staff undertake training in safeguarding and paediatric first aid, and collection arrangements use authorised adults and passwords when needed.
In November 2024, observations and information from parents were used to identify children's next learning steps and additional needs. Daily routines also gave children practice with coats, lunch packaging and handwashing. These are useful examples of independence being built through ordinary tasks.
The same inspection identified two improvements: adults needed to help children understand feelings and manage disagreements more independently, and planned craft work needed to allow more invention and provide greater challenge for older children. These points temper the positive judgement and are relevant to families weighing emotional development and creative freedom.
Octopus operates on Winchester Road, Burnham on Sea, Somerset, TA8 1JD, within the school site. Opening hours are 8am to 5.30pm Monday to Thursday and 8am to 3.30pm Friday, during term time.
The full day begins at 9am, and morning sessions are also offered. Breakfast and after-school clubs support nursery families and families using Burnham Infant School. Friday's earlier closure and the term-time calendar are important practical boundaries for working parents.
Families can contact the nursery by telephone or email, and visits can be arranged. Attendance on the school site does not guarantee a Reception place; families still use the local authority admissions process.
Drivers are asked to follow a voluntary one-way route, approaching along Gloucester Road and leaving along Winchester Road. The school car park is reserved for staff and disabled staff or guests, and pedestrians are directed to the path beside it.
Private daycare and funded childcare are offered, including Working Family Entitlement and Early Years Entitlement for children aged 2, 3 and 4. Provision operates during term time. Current prices come in the nursery's written quotation.
Cooked lunches carry an additional charge and are offered only to children attending morning sessions; families may instead send a packed lunch with an ice pack. Fruit and vegetable snacks are provided in the morning and afternoon, and dietary requirements can be discussed during induction.
Parents supply nappies and wipes when their child is toilet training. Families can send labelled sun cream if they prefer it to the nursery's own supply.
Octopus suits families seeking term-time daycare or morning sessions, as well as those needing breakfast and after-school clubs linked to Burnham Infant School. Its key-person partnerships and Tapestry journal give parents concrete ways to stay involved, while the room structure makes the progression from younger to older children easy to understand.
The November 2024 Good judgement provides a positive inspection position, with clear development points around emotions and creative challenge. The decision turns on that educational balance and a practical timetable that ends earlier on Fridays and follows school terms.
Ofsted rated it Good on 13 November 2024. Safeguarding was effective, with improvement points concerning emotional understanding, resolving disagreements and adult-planned craft activities.
