Rainbow Pre-School

At a Glance

Cardboard-box bus adventures and sand-made ice creams give Rainbow Pre-School's July 2023 picture its character: imaginative play with plenty of conversation. Based at Hindhaye County Infant School on Leigh Road in Street, it has capacity for 32 children.

At its July 2023 inspection, Ofsted rated the provision Good and found that children progressed well, with confident, independent play and preparation for their next educational steps. Children attending then were aged 0 to 4. Those findings describe that period rather than today's daily arrangements.

The Nursery Experience

In July 2023, learning combined children's choices with activities led by adults. The early years foundation stage sets the framework for learning, development and care; here, its everyday expression included stories, counting, movement and imaginative play.

We're Going on a Bear Hunt connected storytelling with movement and new vocabulary that July. Children experimented with musical instruments, changing their playing speed in response to instructions. Building brick towers gave staff opportunities to introduce language about height, while pasta-necklace making exercised small hand movements. These examples show how practical play brought language, number and physical skills together.

Outside in July 2023, stepping stones encouraged hopping, skipping and jumping, and children climbed a ladder to reach a slide. There was also a clear limitation: adult-led learning for two-year-olds did not consistently address each child's next developmental steps.

Care and Support

At the July 2023 inspection, Ofsted found safeguarding effective and judged that close work with parents supported progress, including for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities. Staff recognised warning signs, understood reporting routes and supervised play appropriately.

In July 2023, practitioners gathered information from parents about children's interests and individual needs. Their interactions were sensitive, and children played cooperatively. Lunchtime also provided opportunities to discuss healthy eating.

Communication needed further attention that July. Clear speech and repetition helped some children, but staff needed additional ways to help children who were not yet speaking express themselves. This matters alongside the positive account of relationships: warm interaction and sufficiently tailored communication support are separate considerations.

Practical Information

Things to Consider

  • Learning for two-year-olds. The July 2023 improvement priority concerned making adult-led activities more closely match individual next steps. Ask how those steps now shape activities for your child.
  • Children developing speech. July 2023 findings called for more communication strategies for children who were not yet speaking. Ask for examples of the support your child would receive.
  • Term-time planning. The July 2023 opening pattern covered term time and ended at 2.45pm. At a visit, establish the current attendance arrangements and how they fit your family's week.

The Verdict

Rainbow's July 2023 account will interest families who value imaginative play, practical learning and close communication with staff. Its term-time daytime pattern then suited families organising care around the school year. The two priorities to explore are individualised learning for two-year-olds and support for children developing speech.
