Daily outings to Trull King George V Park and Forest School sessions at Trull Primary School give Trull Saplings Preschool a clear outdoor character. Indoors, children aged two to four share one room rather than moving through separate age-based rooms. It is a village preschool with a mixed-age day.
Based at Trull Church Community Centre in Taunton, the preschool has 50 places in total and accepts children from age two to statutory school age. At its January 2022 inspection, Ofsted rated it Good, judged safeguarding effective and found that children made good progress. That judgement gives a dated assessment of care and education, alongside today's practical offer.
Attendance is term-time only, with morning and all-day bookings. The preschool is a committee-run charity, giving parents a route into its governance as well as their own child's learning.
The single-room arrangement brings toddlers and older preschool children together. Age-specific learning sits within that shared space: for two-year-olds, the emphasis is on sensory exploration, movement, early communication and learning to play with others. Older children work on early literacy, solving problems and managing feelings, while preparation for Reception includes number work, introductory phonics and growing independence.
This is a choice about the kind of day a child will have. Families seeking mixed-age play will find it central to the organisation here; the age groups are learning stages within one room. The whole-setting capacity of 50 is separate from the number of children attending any particular session.
The EYFS provides the framework for children's learning and care, including communication, friendships, turn-taking and understanding boundaries. In everyday terms, children practise these skills through play and interaction. Painting and craft, rhythm activities, stories, pretend play and sensory exploration provide concrete ways to participate.
In January 2022, children used sticks gathered outdoors to make pictures, cared for toy animals during pretend play and joined songs with actions. Those examples show how outdoor experiences, imagination and movement could connect across the day. Adult-led learning needed more attention: some children were not fully involved during group activities.
Trull King George V Park supplies space for outdoor exploration, while Forest School, an approach to learning outdoors through practical experiences, takes place at Trull Primary School. Park visits, woodland exploration and outings to the waterfall form part of the daily outdoor offer. Regular use of the school's Forest School facilities gives children another setting in which to explore nature.
The outdoor emphasis also featured in January 2022, when children collected natural materials on daily park walks and ran across a playing field. These were opportunities for close observation as well as physical activity. Nature was brought back into creative play indoors.
Each child has a key person, with settling sessions for children and their families to visit and meet staff. The key person plans learning, maintains development records and works with parents. This gives families a clear contact for both everyday information and longer conversations about their child.
Tapestry, the online learning journal, lets parents see photographs and observations of learning and contribute experiences from home. Parent meetings and Next Steps forms provide further ways to discuss progress and continue activities beyond preschool. The exchange works in both directions: home observations help staff plan for the child, rather than simply sending updates out to families.
The SENCo works alongside the key person on additional planning, and a learning support assistant can be assigned where necessary. Somerset Total Communication supports interaction through signing, facial expression, photographs, symbols and objects. That gives children ways to communicate alongside speech, with additional staff training arranged around individual needs.
Physical access includes an accessible main entrance, a disabled toilet and a lift serving the second floor. Medication arrangements can include a Medical Care Plan for regular medicines. These are practical mechanisms for accommodating individual needs, rather than a general promise that one arrangement will suit every child.
At the January 2022 inspection, Ofsted identified two improvements: keeping every child involved in group learning and giving children who used another language at home more opportunities to hear and communicate in both languages. These are useful questions for families considering the shared-room day, especially where a child is developing more than one language.
School preparation includes emotional understanding and self-care. In January 2022, children practised identifying feelings, putting on shoes and managing their own drinks. Transfer information and a School Transfer Meeting support the move onwards, allowing knowledge about the child to accompany the change of setting.
The address is Trull Church Community Centre, Church Road, Trull, Taunton, TA3 7JZ. The preschool operates for 38 weeks each year. Opening hours are 9am to 3pm on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, with Wednesday finishing at 1pm.
Standard morning bookings run from 9am to 1pm, Monday to Friday; all-day bookings run from 9am to 3pm on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. For the specified 15-hour funding options, morning sessions instead finish at noon. That distinction matters when arranging collection and matching a booking to funded hours.
The 15 hours can be used in three ways: two all-day sessions and one funded morning, one all-day session and three funded mornings, or five funded mornings. Extra hours beyond the entitlement are charged. Requests for one-off sessions are considered subject to space in the requested session.
Funded childcare includes two-year-old funding, universal 15-hour funding and 30-hour funding for three- and four-year-olds, subject to the relevant eligibility and documentation requirements. Delivery is term-time. The preschool's weekly opening total is 28 hours, so its timetable matters when planning how to use an entitlement.
Consumables are included in fees, with no separate consumables charge for funded hours. There is no deposit. Payment by cash or cheque carries a processing charge, including for entitlement-only attendance; current prices come in the preschool's written quotation. The funding and fees information sets out the charge structure.
Invoices arrive electronically at the start of each half term and payment is due within two weeks. Paid sessions remain chargeable during illness or family holidays. Reducing sessions requires four weeks' notice, while leaving requires one month's notice, making those terms relevant to families expecting their arrangements to change.
The preschool describes a close working relationship with Trull Primary School and regular use of its Forest School facilities. Attendance does not guarantee a school place; families still use the local authority admissions process. The relationship offers shared experiences, not an admissions entitlement.
Trull Saplings suits families seeking either morning preschool or a mixture of mornings and all-day attendance during term time. Its strongest practical appeal is the combination of a shared room, daily outdoor exploration and access to Trull Primary School's Forest School facilities.
Key-person planning, Tapestry and communication support provide concrete ways for families to stay involved. The dated Good judgement is balanced by clear improvement points around group learning and home languages. For parents comfortable with mixed-age play and the shorter Wednesday, this is a community preschool with an identifiable daily character.
Ofsted rated it Good in January 2022 and judged safeguarding effective. Improvement points concerned children's involvement in group learning and support for communication in their home languages.
Children are accepted from age two to statutory school age. The preschool uses one shared room for children aged two to four.
Daily outdoor exploration includes Trull King George V Park, with Forest School sessions at Trull Primary School. Somerset Total Communication adds signing and visual aids to support children's interaction.
