Little Acers Pre School

At a Glance

A large playroom, an extended outdoor area and access to woodland give Little Acers Pre School a clear identity: play can move between indoors, its own outdoor space and the surrounding green areas. In Bradley Stoke, the setting uses the Sure Start Centre on the Bowsland Green Primary School site. It has 34 places in total.

At its 3 February 2023 inspection, Ofsted rated Little Acers Outstanding, finding an ambitious curriculum responsive to children's interests. That judgement has substance behind it: practical experiments, thoughtful adaptations to storytelling and opportunities for children to pursue their own ideas. These are dated observations, rather than a description of every child's experience today.

Morning, afternoon and all-day attendance sit within a term-time timetable. For families weighing educational style as closely as hours, the central choice is whether a child-led preschool fits their expectations.

The Nursery Experience

Learning and Activities

Children choose what to explore, and practitioners extend the activity through interaction. A child's interest supplies the starting point; staff introduce another possibility, a question or a resource. The group-wide child-led approach places play ahead of adult-directed letter tracing or number recitation, while supporting those interests when children initiate them. This makes the adult's role active, even when the child chooses the task.

The statutory early years foundation stage covers children's learning, development and care, including language, physical skills and relationships. In February 2023, expressive storytelling, handling small tools and cooperating during play gave these areas practical form. Here, the child-led approach gives those requirements a practical expression through play, conversation and staff involvement, rather than replacing the framework with a separate programme.

In February 2023, children experimented with water and chalk, watching colours merge as the water ran down. They also made designs using small hammers, wooden pieces and nails. These examples show the breadth of the activities: investigating materials and handling tools both had a place. Children had time to investigate materials and develop ideas of their own.

Storytelling was equally adaptable in February 2023. Staff arranged fabric around part of the book corner for children who listened more readily in a snug space. Expressive reading, signing and imaginative play gave children different ways into language. In the pretend home, adults joined the play and introduced vocabulary within the children's conversations.

The language of the month initiative celebrated languages and cultures in February 2023, while All About Me books represented both children and staff as individuals. These activities brought differences between people into everyday learning. They gave children something more personal to discuss than an abstract lesson about respect.

Outdoor and Community Life

The dedicated outdoor area has been extended, and children also have access to nearby green space, woodland and a play park. Outdoor play therefore has several settings, rather than depending entirely on the preschool's own area.

In February 2023, regular woodland walks included gathering natural objects, listening to birds and climbing tree trunks. Seasonal changes and a fallen tree became subjects for discussion. The outings combined movement with observation: children could encounter something outdoors and then consider how or why it happened.

Care and Support

At the February 2023 inspection, Ofsted judged safeguarding effective and found that children progressed very well, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities. The current team structure includes a manager with designated safeguarding lead and SEND coordinator responsibilities, alongside a deputy with a deputy safeguarding lead role. These are identifiable responsibilities for families who need to discuss support or raise a concern.

In February 2023, children's relationships with staff were warm, and children readily shared news with them. Adults talked about feelings and demonstrated respectful ways of speaking. Children practised cooperation through ordinary play, helping friends with play dough shapes or sharing construction techniques. Care and learning were closely connected in those interactions.

Home learning had a tangible form in February 2023. Story and interest bags contained books, puppets, games and suggestions for making things or trying recipes. Taking these resources home gave families a shared activity to build on, rather than simply a description of what their child had done.

Communication also included window of the week updates on an online platform in February 2023. Alongside the take-home bags, this offered parents different ways to connect with the preschool day: seeing an account of activities and participating in related learning at home.

Practical Information

Sessions and Attendance

Opening hours are 9am to 3pm, Monday to Friday, during term time. Families can choose morning, afternoon or all-day sessions. That range allows attendance to be considered around either a shorter part of the day or the whole opening window; the term-time calendar remains the central practical constraint.

Funding and Paid Extras

Little Acers offers the 2 year old Nursery Education Grant for children whose families receive qualifying benefits and the 2 year old Working Parents Entitlement. Funding eligibility is conditional; mentioning an entitlement does not establish that an individual family qualifies. Attendance follows the term-time timetable. Families should obtain current prices in a written quotation from the nursery.

Moving on to School

The preschool shares the grounds of Bowsland Green Primary School. Attendance does not guarantee a Reception place: families still apply through the local authority admissions process. The shared location may matter to household planning, but it should be considered separately from the school admissions decision.

Things to Consider

  • Term-time attendance. Morning, afternoon and all-day sessions operate within weekday opening hours of 9am to 3pm. Families needing care during school holidays will need a separate arrangement.
  • Play-led learning. Children choose activities and adults extend their interests. During a visit, ask to see how practitioners develop an activity a child has chosen into further learning.
  • The written quotation. Before committing, ask how meals, non-food consumables and any additional charges are handled for the attendance pattern and funding entitlement you intend to use.
  • Shared school grounds. Little Acers occupies a site within Bowsland Green Primary School's grounds. Keep the preschool decision separate from the Reception application, because attendance does not guarantee admission.

The Verdict

Little Acers suits families seeking morning or afternoon preschool sessions, as well as those wanting all-day attendance within a term-time routine. Its current offer has a clear emphasis on children's choices, with a large playroom and several opportunities for outdoor play.

The February 2023 examples add depth to that picture: practical making, adaptable storytelling, woodland exploration and resources to take home. The appeal is an approach that starts with a child's interest and gives adults a purposeful role in extending it. Families should weigh that educational style alongside the term-time timetable and the separate process for securing a school place.
