Woodlands Nursery

At a Glance

Pretend chocolates made from dough, books explored with babies and preschool children helping to set lunch tables give Woodlands Nursery a practical, hands-on character. These were features of daily life in December 2023, with children practising small movements, language and independence through ordinary activities.

At its 11 December 2023 inspection, Ofsted judged Woodlands Nursery Good overall and found safeguarding effective. Based at Belton Woods Hotel in Belton, Grantham, the nursery has capacity for 30 children and accepts ages from 2 to 60 months.

The Nursery Experience

The early years foundation stage sets the requirements for children's learning, development and care: here, the December 2023 activities illustrate how play can bring those strands together. Toddlers shaped dough into pretend chocolates, exercising their hands as they copied adults. Babies explored books with staff who described pictures and helped them turn pages.

Independence also had concrete jobs attached to it. In December 2023, babies practised feeding themselves with spoons, toddlers located their coats and preschool children helped prepare tables for lunch. Conversations drew on children's experiences at home, giving them familiar subjects to talk about and questions to think through.

Outdoor climbing equipment brought another kind of learning. In December 2023, staff explained turn-taking and the need for an adult to be present. A visiting teacher led a physical activity session once a week. Diwali celebrations included food made by parents, while Australia Day recognised children's family heritage; these activities connected nursery life with the families attending.

Care and Support

In December 2023, new babies received individual cuddles and reassurance. Preschool children comforted friends who felt sad, and staff helped children resolve disputes over toys by considering how to take turns. Care included both adult reassurance and opportunities to practise relationships with other children.

Books and games went home with families in December 2023, extending learning beyond nursery. Staff gathered information about children's home lives and used it in activities, while low staff turnover supported continuity. Freshly cooked meals included fish pie with vegetables, and adults helped children with hygiene and personal care when needed.

Practical Information

The address is Belton Woods Hotel, Belton, Grantham, NG32 2LN. Opening hours are 7.30am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, across the year, with closures on Christmas Day and New Year's Day.

In December 2023, funded early education was offered for children aged two, three and four. That dated funding position should be kept separate from the nursery's current opening arrangements.

Things to Consider

  • Help to join in. In December 2023, some children needed support to become involved in purposeful play that staff did not always recognise. Ask how practitioners now identify and help a child who is struggling to participate.
  • Settling a baby. Individual reassurance was a clear feature in December 2023. During a visit, discuss how settling would work for your child and who would provide their day-to-day care.
  • Holiday cover. Year-round opening includes closures on Christmas Day and New Year's Day. Families needing care on those dates will need another arrangement.

The Verdict

Woodlands suits families seeking year-round weekday care who value practical independence and activities connected to children's home lives. Its December 2023 picture combines attentive baby care, shared books and everyday responsibilities. The important qualification is participation: children who need help getting involved should receive that support, rather than simply have activities within reach.
