A garden reserved for babies gives Conkers Nursery School a clear starting point: outdoor exploration begins in its youngest room, rather than waiting until children are older. The setting at Chestnut Tree Farm in Diss combines three age-based classrooms with a child-led approach and everyday use of natural materials. Its accepted age range runs from two months to five years.
At its 19 January 2023 inspection, Ofsted rated Conkers Good and found its safeguarding arrangements effective. The important qualification concerns preschool learning: staff did not consistently help children consolidate existing knowledge and extend their skills through purposeful activities. That deserves attention alongside the positive account of children's relationships, language and independence.
Conkers opens across the year, while its enquiry form also accommodates requests for term-time-only care. For parents, the strongest practical distinction is the progression from a baby garden to older children's indoor-outdoor play, with room changes planned around the child and their key person.
Spring Room, for children aged zero to two, combines sensory experiences with its own garden, used several times during the day to support movement and outdoor exploration. Having outdoor space attached to the youngest children's provision gives fresh air a place in their routine.
Summer Room, for ages two to three, emphasises language through social play, growing independence and circle-time introductions to colours, shapes, numbers and days of the week. Those activities prepare toddlers for the next room while giving them time with their key person.
Autumn Room, for ages three to five, uses free-flow indoor-outdoor play, sink-and-float experiments and shared problem-solving to develop independence ahead of school. The practical emphasis is on children exploring questions and making decisions, rather than simply completing adult-directed tasks.
The early years foundation stage sets the requirements for children's learning, development and care; here, learning through play connects exploration with language, physical development and independence. Conkers also follows the Birth to 5 curriculum and uses a child-led approach. Natural materials and sustainable resources are part of its current offer, alongside opportunities to explore the natural world each day.
In January 2023, babies investigated melting ice and experimented with stacking cubes. Younger children drew with chunky chalk outdoors, then poured water over their marks and watched them disappear. These were small, concrete investigations: children could handle materials, change them and see the result.
During that same month, staff introduced vocabulary through play and allowed children time to answer. Mathematics appeared in cutting and counting play dough and comparing the outlines of children's feet. Story sessions involved babies handling book pages and toddlers joining repeated phrases. The examples show how conversation, number and early reading fitted into activities children could take part in directly.
Settling sessions take place before a child starts. Parents and children meet the key person and become familiar with the surroundings, giving the relationship time to begin before regular attendance. Later moves between classrooms are planned with parents and the key person, so the next stage is a shared decision rather than just an age-band change.
Ovivio is the nursery's parent communication app. It brings together observations, daily diaries, invoices and nursery news, giving families a regular route into their child's day and the practical administration around it. That is useful continuity between home and nursery, especially while a child is settling or changing rooms.
In January 2023, children practised independence in ordinary routines: younger children poured drinks, while older children served their own lunch. Staff encouraged persistence when babies attempted to stack ice and older children worked with scissors. Support took the form of patient encouragement and another opportunity to try.
A cook prepares food on site, with breakfast, snacks, lunch and tea made fresh each day. Preparation takes account of allergies and dietary needs.
The preschool concern needs to sit beside those strengths. In January 2023, some activities did not consistently move children's learning forward, and closer monitoring of staff practice was the required improvement. Families choosing the oldest room should weigh its experiments and free-flow play alongside that dated finding.
Opening hours are 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, across 51 weeks of the year; weekends and bank holidays are closed. Conkers recommends at least two sessions each week to help children settle. This is a recommendation, rather than a stated minimum booking requirement.
Parents can request all-year-round care or a term-time-only place through the enquiry form. Contact is also possible by telephone on 01379 644 461 or by email at manager@conkersnurseryschool.co.uk. Settling sessions are arranged before attendance begins, allowing the child and parent to get to know their key person.
The address is Chestnut Tree Farm, The Heywood, Diss, Norfolk, IP22 5SZ. The rural setting and daily natural-world exploration make the surroundings part of the nursery experience, rather than simply a location for childcare.
Conkers accepts Tax-Free Childcare and Government Early Education Funding, including 15 hours and 30 hours of funded childcare for eligible working parents with children over nine months. Eligibility conditions apply, and the nursery works with families on how funding fits the sessions they need.
Private childcare is charged by the hour, with age-related pricing bands. Current prices come in the nursery's written quotation; fees are discussed during the show-around. The sessions and funding page explains the funding options and settling arrangements.
Conkers suits families seeking all-year-round care, a child-led day and outdoor exploration beginning in the baby room. Spring Room's garden, Autumn Room's experiments and the Ovivio app give the offer useful substance. The preschool improvement from January 2023 remains the key question when considering the oldest children's experience. Settling with a key person and collaborative room changes give families concrete ways to support each stage.
