Stanley's at Primrose

At a Glance

An outdoor stage for singing and dancing gives Stanley's at Primrose a memorable detail: in December 2025, children performed there for their friends, while everyday routines included preparing snacks and managing their own clothing. Small tasks gave children opportunities to practise independence.

Based at Primrose Children's Centre in Jarrow, the nursery has 57 places for children aged 2 to 60 months. At its December 2025 inspection, Ofsted judged all six areas to meet the expected standard and safeguarding standards to be met, with appropriate progress across learning and individualised support for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities.

The Nursery Experience

The early years foundation stage sets the framework for children's learning, development and care: play, conversation and everyday activities contribute to learning alongside personal care.

In December 2025, books became more demanding as children moved through the nursery, and staff explained unfamiliar vocabulary. Physical activities varied with development: babies experimented with paint, toddlers handled stickers and older children worked dough. These experiences combined expression with practice using hands and fingers.

Daily outdoor play offered opportunities to practise balance and coordination. Climbing equipment supported physical development, while the outdoor stage made space for shared performance. The garden was being refurbished in December 2025 to extend outdoor learning; that was work in progress at the time.

Mathematics needed a clearer sequence. In December 2025, some children were encouraged towards larger numbers before understanding smaller ones securely, so remembering a counting sequence could get ahead of understanding quantity.

Care and Support

In December 2025, babies' care followed their individual routines, and familiar staff responded to their needs. Home–nursery link bears helped with settling, while home visits had been introduced to build relationships with families. These provided connections between home and nursery life.

At the December 2025 inspection, Ofsted found that support for inclusion involved adapting activities and routines, reviewing progress with families and coordinating specialist input where appropriate. Practical adjustments included low-level furniture and quieter spaces, giving children different ways to participate.

During that month, staff supervised sleep and mealtimes carefully, discussed emotions with children and explained why handwashing mattered. Meals were nutritionally balanced, and staff joined children at the table for conversation. Families also took part in social activities and received signposting to wider services.

Practical Information

The address is Primrose Children's Centre, Lambton Terrace, Jarrow, NE32 5QY. Opening hours are 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, and the nursery operates across the year.

In December 2025, preparation for the next educational stage included everyday independence: children handled clothing and helped prepare snacks. These are useful practical skills alongside language and early learning.

Things to Consider

  • Early mathematics. December 2025 teaching sometimes moved towards larger numbers too soon. Secure understanding of small quantities matters more than reciting a longer sequence.
  • Group routines. In December 2025, staff did not consistently establish whether children had understood and followed instructions during group activities. Some children consequently lost concentration.
  • Attendance arrangements. The nursery opens across the year, from 8am to 6pm on weekdays. At a visit, ask which booking pattern would fit your family's working week.

The Verdict

Stanley's at Primrose suits families seeking all-year weekday childcare, with babies through older nursery children accommodated within the same setting. Its December 2025 picture combined personal care, practical independence and language-rich play. The outdoor stage adds character. Clearer early-number teaching and more consistent group instructions are the important qualifications to that assessment.
