Westoe Village Kindergarten

At a Glance

In April 2022, a bus ride followed by building a bus from boxes captured Westoe Village Kindergarten’s approach: real experiences became material for children’s own ideas. At its April 2022 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Outstanding, finding an ambitious curriculum and strong engagement in learning.

On St George's Avenue in South Shields, the nursery has capacity for 67 children, with an accepted age range of 2 to 60 months. The inspection account gives particular substance to its child-led approach, from imaginative construction to children taking the lead in storytelling.

The Nursery Experience

The early years foundation stage sets the framework for children’s learning, development and care: play, conversation and practical experiences help children develop their skills. In April 2022, children chose their activities and explored ideas together, including rearranging space so everyone could join a drawing activity.

Learning extended beyond planned activities. In April 2022, discovering a spider’s web prompted children to construct one using tape and draw insects to catch in it. During stories, children took turns telling the tale and inventing alternative endings. These examples put thinking and language into purposeful play.

The physical environment supported movement. In April 2022, children could move between indoor and outdoor areas independently, babies used furniture to practise moving towards walking, and cosy spaces allowed quieter time with staff. Older children also completed a daily mile, an exercise activity in which they compared how their hearts felt before and afterwards. Discussions about teeth and food linked movement with other aspects of health.

Care and Support

At the April 2022 inspection, Ofsted found effective safeguarding and highly effective SEND support, including prompt identification of learning needs and language work involving speech and language teams. That combination matters for families whose children need support tailored to their development.

In April 2022, parents had a meeting with their child’s key person each term, online or in person, and received ideas for supporting learning at home. Staff had also undertaken sign-language training to support communication. Children formed close relationships with staff, while shared meals gave them opportunities to talk together; older children practised independence by choosing food from a trolley.

Practical Information

The address is St George's Avenue, South Shields, NE34 6ET. Opening hours are 7.30am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, across the year, with closures on bank holidays and for one week at Christmas.

In April 2022, the nursery provided funded early education for children aged two, three and four. This is an inspection-era funding position.

Things to Consider

  • Attendance and funding. Which booking patterns and funded-hours arrangements would fit your child’s week? Discuss these together during a visit.
  • Communication support. The April 2022 account includes sign language and work with speech and language teams. Consider how these approaches fit your child’s communication needs.

The Verdict

Westoe Village Kindergarten suits families who value children making choices, practical exploration and communication with a key person. Its April 2022 account gives concrete examples of that approach, rather than relying on broad promises. The weekday opening window is also useful for parents planning care around work, while the learning and care observations remain a dated picture.
