Crawly creatures and an adventure garden give Co-op Childcare Southampton a recognisable character: children can investigate living things, while practitioners bring bugs in for them to examine. The setting combines this interest in the natural world with indoor space and a practical emphasis on independence. Small discoveries matter here.
On Warren Crescent in Shirley Warren, the nursery has capacity for 100 children, with an accepted age range of 3 months to 5 years. At its 18 December 2023 inspection, Ofsted rated the provision Good and found that children were progressing well, although staff needed a clearer understanding of curriculum aims and better organisation of changes between activities, especially meals.
Attendance choices include morning and afternoon sessions alongside several day lengths. That gives families more than one way to fit nursery into their week.
The early years foundation stage provides the framework for learning and care: children build communication, social and practical skills through play and everyday experiences. In December 2023, early writing included letters to Santa, while seasonal singing introduced rhythm and rhyme. These were activities with a learning purpose, rather than simply a festive diversion.
Independence also featured in ordinary routines that December. Children helped prepare the table and served their own Christmas meal, giving them opportunities to contribute and practise managing tasks for themselves. Learning about toothbrushing through play connected nursery activities with habits children use at home.
The branch also presents the group-wide Healthy Minds, Healthy Bodies approach, which combines wellbeing with learning about food, emotions and dental care. Boogie Mites contributes dancing to that approach. For families, the useful connection is between physical activity and learning about looking after themselves, rather than a programme name alone.
The adventure garden supplies outdoor space alongside the airy interior. Practitioners often introduce crawly creatures for children to observe, so an interest in bugs has a concrete place in the nursery's activities. This gives curious children something real to investigate and discuss.
In December 2023, older children took responsibility for conserving water through the water warriors activity, spotting taps that needed turning off. The lesson was practical: children could act on an environmental idea immediately. It also gave them a reason to explain their choices to an adult.
Group-wide social responsibility activities presented by this branch include Mini Medics, introducing first aid, and visits to care homes. These add experiences centred on caring for other people. They sit alongside play and communication, rather than replacing the early years framework.
Head Start is the group-wide settling approach presented by Southampton, combining individual care, a dedicated Key Person and partnership with parents. Its practical value is a familiar adult who gets to know the child, with parents involved in the settling process.
In December 2023, staff spent time responding to parents' questions during settling sessions and shared ideas for learning at home. They also adapted communication to children who expressed themselves through gestures or facial expressions. For a child still developing spoken language, being able to communicate a need in another way matters.
At the December 2023 inspection, Ofsted found effective safeguarding arrangements and good support for children with SEND and those learning English as an additional language. Staff used familiar words from children's home languages and targeted listening and attention activities, linking support to how individual children communicated and learned.
During that December, extra funding helped purchase speech and language resources and staff training. Group activities involving objects drawn from a bucket were used to capture children's attention. The detail matters because support involved a specific activity and resources, rather than a general promise of inclusion.
The current team holds Millie’s Mark, the certification associated here with paediatric first aid training across the nursery team. This describes an arrangement for responding to health emergencies; the dated safeguarding judgement remains a separate consideration.
The address is 107 Warren Crescent, Shirley Warren, Southampton, SO16 6AY. Opening hours are 7am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, with year-round operation except bank holidays and training days.
A Full Day runs from 7am to 6pm; a Short Day starts at 8am and finishes at 6pm. The School Day runs from 9am to 3pm, while Morning sessions cover 7am to 1pm and Afternoon sessions run from 1pm to 6pm. Full-day and short-day bookings also have five-day patterns, and the branch offers term-time-only attendance.
These choices serve different routines: a morning booking leaves the afternoon outside nursery, while the School Day provides a shorter finish than either of the longer days. Enquiries can be made by telephone or email, and showaround booking is offered.
Funded childcare is offered, including fully funded and term-time-only patterns, alongside paid sessions. Current prices come in the nursery's written quotation, so the relevant comparison is the total for the chosen attendance pattern.
Breakfast, lunch and tea carry separate charges across sessions; for children taking a fully funded place, those meal charges are voluntary and can be removed on request. Charges continue for bank holidays and absences caused by illness or family holidays, which affects the cost of maintaining a regular booking.
Co-op Childcare Southampton suits families looking for either morning or afternoon sessions, a School Day, or longer attendance, with term-time-only provision also part of the offer. Its bug activities and adventure garden give children tangible things to explore, while the settling approach gives parents a defined role alongside a Key Person.
The December 2023 findings give useful substance to that picture: everyday independence, attention to different forms of communication and specific support activities. Curriculum clarity and the flow into meals are the practical points to explore before choosing it. The strongest fit is a family that values nature, participation in everyday tasks and a choice of attendance lengths.
