Avenue Playgroup

At a Glance

Beach outings, Bible stories and play chosen by children give Avenue Playgroup its character. Based at Avenue Baptist Church in Westcliff-on-Sea, it combines a church setting with practical preschool experiences: messy activities, singing and time outside. The emphasis is on learning by doing.

Ofsted rated Avenue Playgroup Good at its 17 July 2023 inspection. It has capacity for 30 children in total, while its facilities cater for children aged two-and-a-half up to five. Weekday mornings during term time shape the attendance offer, making the playgroup a practical option for families seeking a preschool routine that leaves afternoons free.

The Nursery Experience

Learning and Activities

The early years foundation stage provides the framework for children's learning, development and care, with play giving children opportunities to practise language, explore materials and build independence. At Avenue, children choose their play, alongside shared stories, songs with actions and imaginative activities. Messy Play gives them opportunities to explore materials; Bible stories bring Christian content into the day. Families choosing a church-based playgroup should understand that this content forms part of the activities themselves.

In July 2023, children's interests helped shape what staff offered. Magnetic shapes became large vehicles for children who enjoyed joining things together. Elsewhere, children constructed ramps for toy cars and explored how changing the height affected their speed. These examples show learning taking place through children's experiments, with resources that could be rearranged to test an idea.

Butterfly collage work in July 2023 connected craft with an insect topic. Children used pictures and craft materials while recalling the change from caterpillar to butterfly. Sand play also drew on earlier experience: children remembered that making a sandcastle required wet sand. The activities connected making things with remembering and explaining.

Outdoor and Community Life

Trips to local parks and the beach take place throughout the year. They give children experiences beyond the playgroup and material to return to in their play. In July 2023, a recent beach visit was followed by digging for shells and pebbles in sand, linking an outing with exploration back at the setting.

Outside play is also part of the offer. During July 2023, children experimented with large bubbles using wands and talked about the soap involved. Indoors, washing dolls in a baby bath provided another opportunity to explore water, soap and descriptive language. The same everyday material could support different kinds of play.

Care and Support

A key worker is assigned to each child and works with the family around that child's interests and needs. This gives parents a particular member of staff with whom to build a relationship, rather than relying only on conversations with whoever happens to be present. A monthly Thursday coffee morning also gives playgroup parents a regular opportunity to meet.

At the July 2023 inspection, Ofsted found safeguarding effective and children with special educational needs and/or disabilities making good progress, supported by individual plans and discussions with parents about their next steps. For a family whose child needs additional help, the concrete mechanism here was a plan shaped around the child, with parents involved in reviewing learning.

In July 2023, staff spent time comforting children who were distressed, while children also helped one another during play. Independence was practised through using the toilet and washing hands. Separate toilets designed for children support these everyday routines, and healthy snacks are provided each morning.

The July 2023 team comprised nine childcare staff, seven of whom held early years qualifications at level 3 or above. Training took place regularly, although evaluating its effect on teaching needed more attention. That distinction matters: attending training and applying it effectively are separate questions.

Practical Information

Sessions and Attendance

Avenue Playgroup runs weekday mornings, from 9.15am to 12.15pm, during term time. Paid attendance is organised by the morning, so the offer fits a family routine built around a morning of preschool and an afternoon elsewhere. The term-time calendar is a central consideration for working parents planning care through school holidays.

The playgroup is at Avenue Baptist Church, Milton Road, Westcliff-on-Sea, SS0 7JX. Its direct enquiry route is avenueplaygroup@avenuebaptist.com or 07745 346819.

Funding and Paid Extras

Funded childcare is offered during term time for three- and four-year-olds from the term after their third birthday, and for some two-year-olds depending on parental financial circumstances. The playgroup also participates in extended hours funding for three- and four-year-olds with working parents and the Government tax free childcare scheme. These arrangements have eligibility conditions; participation does not establish an individual family's entitlement.

Private morning attendance is also offered. Current prices come in the playgroup's written quotation. Healthy morning snacks form part of the daily provision.

Things to Consider

  • Morning, term-time attendance. The 9.15am to 12.15pm pattern leaves afternoons and school holidays outside the playgroup day. Consider how it fits the rest of your family's care arrangements.
  • Christian content. Bible stories sit alongside songs, messy activities and imaginative play. On a visit, ask how this content is introduced to children and discussed with families.
  • Teaching development. In July 2023, mathematical vocabulary during play needed more attention, as did assessing whether training changed teaching and helped staff extend children's ideas. Ask for a current example of how these areas have developed.
  • Snack and care costs. Healthy snacks are provided each morning. When discussing the written quotation, ask how snacks and any consumables are treated for paid and funded attendance.

The Verdict

Avenue Playgroup suits families seeking term-time preschool mornings with child-led play, outings and Christian stories woven into the activities. Its key worker arrangement and parent coffee morning give family relationships a practical structure. The July 2023 assessment provides a positive starting point, balanced by specific teaching improvements around mathematical language and the application of training.
