Albany Montessori School

At a Glance

Child-led choice has real substance at Albany Montessori School. Children select accessible activities, work through them at their own pace and return materials when finished. That Montessori structure is joined by a busy weekly pattern of music, yoga, French, Chinese, cooking, multisports and a visit to the park.

Ofsted judged the setting Good in November 2022, with Good judgements across education, behaviour, personal development and leadership. The current profile covers children aged two to five and 34 places at Westminster Lodge in St Albans.

Families can choose morning, afternoon and full-day sessions, with breakfast and extended care around the core day. Term-time and 48-week patterns are offered.

The Nursery Experience

Learning and Activities

The Early Years Foundation Stage sets the learning and development requirements, while Montessori shapes how children meet them here. In everyday terms, children build communication, physical, mathematical, creative and personal skills through activities they can select, repeat and complete, alongside adult-led group experiences.

The practical detail makes this approach easier to picture. Choosing time includes number rods, puzzles, painting and sand play. Circle time can explore the solar system, dinosaurs or orchestras. The weekly emphasis changes from music on Monday to Montessori materials and yoga on Tuesday, a park visit on Wednesday, French and cooking on Thursday, then Chinese and multisports on Friday.

In November 2022, inspectors saw children use the brown stairs and pink tower together, comparing their shapes and sizes. They also found that practical tasks were used to build control and independence, including scooping marbles into bowls with cutlery. This is Montessori as purposeful practice rather than a label alone.

Outdoor and Community Life

The outdoor area includes a climbing frame, garden, ride-on toys and space for ball games and reading. The nursery's terms also cover walks to Verulamium Park and occasional trips to St Albans Cathedral or local shops. These experiences extend physical play and local awareness beyond the indoor materials.

Care and Support

A key person works with each family, helps a child settle and uses their needs and interests to plan what comes next. Learning journals bring together observations, achievements and family contributions, with termly summaries and transition records. That gives parents a structured view of progress rather than isolated updates.

At the November 2022 inspection, familiar adults were found to provide emotionally responsive support that helped children form secure relationships. Staff used a Welcome to my world form to understand children's experiences before they started, identified gaps in learning and referred families to outside professionals where extra help was needed. Children with special educational needs and disabilities also received sensitive individual support at that date.

Safeguarding arrangements were effective in November 2022. The same findings identified a specific weakness: mealtimes were not always supervised effectively, and staff sometimes completed tasks that children could attempt themselves. Families should weigh that dated improvement point alongside the otherwise Good judgement.

Practical Information

Sessions and Attendance

The current registration form lists morning sessions from 9am to noon, afternoons from 1pm to 3pm and full days from 9am to 3pm, Monday to Friday. Breakfast Club begins at 7.30am, Early Birds at 8am, and the longest extended pattern runs to 5.30pm. Families may combine sessions, with a minimum of two sessions and three preferred to support continuity and settling.

Two annual patterns are published: 38 weeks during term time, with holiday club booked separately, or 48 weeks across the year. The 48-week arrangement closes for two weeks in summer and two at Christmas. Six weeks' written notice applies to withdrawal, and school holidays do not count towards that notice for term-time places.

Food, Funding and Essentials

Morning snack is available for children to access, with fresh fruit, vegetables and water; afternoon snack is taken together at a table. Families provide a packed lunch. Parents are also asked to supply spare nappies or pull-ups where needed.

The terms cover funded childcare for eligible working families from nine months, age two and 30-hour eligibility, with a valid code and a termly funding form required. Current private prices are supplied by the nursery in a provider-specific quotation. The terms also identify registration and deposit categories without making them part of the day-to-day session price.

Things to Consider

  • Mealtime practice. The November 2022 findings asked the provider to improve supervision and give children more chances to manage food-related tasks independently. Ask how snack and lunch routines now address that point.
  • Attendance commitment. At least two sessions are required and three are preferred for continuity. Families seeking a single weekly session will need a different pattern.
  • Calendar choice. The 38-week and 48-week arrangements have different invoicing rhythms, holiday coverage and notice calculations. Compare the written terms with the weeks of care your family needs.
  • Age range. The current provider profile covers ages two to five, while published admissions material carries broader age claims. Confirm the accepted starting age for the proposed start date before completing registration.

The Verdict

Albany Montessori School has a clear educational identity. Children get sustained choice within an ordered environment, while music, languages, cooking, park visits and physical sessions prevent that choice from becoming narrow. The Good November 2022 judgement supports the quality case, though its mealtime improvement point deserves a direct update from the setting.

It suits families wanting a Montessori-led week with genuine flexibility: mornings or afternoons can be combined, full days cover the core timetable, and extended care widens the day. The two-session minimum and choice between term-time and 48-week attendance make the commitment more structured than casual drop-in care.
