Little Nightingales Nursery

At a Glance

Daily outdoor play and a cottage address give Little Nightingales Nursery its character, while a staged settling process gives families a practical introduction to care. Based at Nightingale Cottage in London Colney, the nursery accepts children from 3 months to 5 years. Its day combines child-led activity, creative work and quieter periods for children who need them.

At its 9 November 2022 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Good and found safeguarding effective. That is a dated judgement, with a specific improvement point: children sometimes spent too long waiting between activities. Relationships and everyday conversation were strengths of the nursery experience at that time.

Extended days, full days, mornings and afternoons provide different ways to attend. The choice matters for families whose childcare needs fit part of a day as well as those organising care around a working day.

The Nursery Experience

Learning and Activities

The early years foundation stage sets the framework for children's learning, development and care: play and everyday experiences help children practise communication, movement and increasing independence. At Little Nightingales, the current daily rhythm includes activities led by adults alongside play shaped by children's interests. Creative time and outdoor play sit within that rhythm rather than being reserved for a special occasion.

In November 2022, staff used children's existing interests to decide what came next. Children exploring families and homes extended those ideas by making houses linked to a familiar story. Babies learning to walk had opportunities to practise. These examples show how planning connected with what individual children were ready to try, rather than expecting everyone to do the same thing.

Conversation also ran through practical activity in November 2022. Adults introduced vocabulary while children played with sand, connecting words to what children could feel and do. Singing and stories provided other opportunities to hear and use language. For parents, the useful detail is the connection between talking and playing: communication was part of ordinary activity, not confined to a separate lesson.

Supernastics and Super Star Sports are named enrichment activities within the current offer.

Outdoor and Community Life

Children spend time outside each day throughout the seasons. Outdoor play is part of both the morning and afternoon routine, giving it a regular place alongside indoor activity. Broad Colney Lakes Nature Reserve is nearby, though the nursery's own daily outdoor routine is the firmer reason to consider it for a child who enjoys being active outside.

Family occasions include Christmas carols, graduation parties and seasonal stay and play sessions. Macmillan coffee mornings bring families together for community events too. These are concrete opportunities for parents to participate in nursery life beyond exchanging information about their own child's day.

Care and Support

Relationships and Communication

Settling begins with a parent present. The usual sequence has three sessions: an initial hour together, another hour with the child attending independently, then a two-hour session. The first meeting covers routines, preferences and allergies as well as paperwork. It gives staff information about the child before the periods of separation begin.

The gradual increase in time provides a clear sequence for families to understand. It also makes the first session more than an introduction to the building: home routines and the child's individual needs form part of the conversation. Alongside this, seasonal family sessions and celebrations create further occasions for parents and staff to spend time together.

In November 2022, everyday independence included older babies drinking from cups and older children managing coats and pouring their own water. Small tasks like these gave children opportunities to participate in their care. They also connected the routine to the next steps children were practising.

Inclusion and Wellbeing

At the November 2022 inspection, Ofsted found that the key-person arrangements supported secure relationships, children made consistent progress, and partnership working helped children with special educational needs and/or disabilities receive appropriate support. The special educational needs coordinator's work included helping families with education healthcare plans. These findings describe care at that visit, rather than a promise about an individual child's experience today.

The current afternoon routine includes naps and calmer activity for children who need them. Fresh food is prepared each day by the nursery's on-site chef. That places food preparation within the setting, alongside a daily rhythm that makes room for rest as well as activity.

Practical Information

Sessions and Attendance

Opening hours are 7.30am to 6.30pm, Monday to Friday, with year-round operation and bank holiday closures. The booking choices distinguish the opening window from the time a family purchases: Extended Day runs from 7.30am to 6.30pm, Full Day from 8am to 6pm, Morning from 8am to 1pm and Afternoon from 1pm to 6pm.

Morning and afternoon bookings therefore offer a different attendance pattern from either day option. The extended day adds time at both ends of the full day, which may matter when fitting childcare around work. Current prices come in the nursery's written quotation.

Getting There

The address is Nightingale Cottage, Barnet Road, London Colney, St Albans, AL2 1BG. A one-way vehicle route leads behind the building to parking space, and the nursery is close to the M25, M1 and A1.

Funding and Paid Extras

Funded childcare is accepted, including 30 hours. Private sessions are also offered through the day and part-day booking choices. Funding and the chosen attendance pattern need to be considered together when assessing the quotation for a family's care.

Things to Consider

  • Waiting between activities. In November 2022, children sometimes became restless while waiting for meals, beds to be put away or garden access. During a visit, ask how these changes in the day are organised now so children remain occupied.
  • The settling sequence. The usual introduction moves from an hour with a parent to independent sessions of one and two hours. Discuss how that sequence would fit your child's routines and previous experience of separation.
  • Funding and the total bill. The nursery accepts funding including 30 hours and offers four attendance patterns. Ask for a written breakdown showing how funded hours, food and non-food consumables apply to your chosen sessions.

The Verdict

Little Nightingales suits families seeking either morning or afternoon care as well as full or extended days. Daily outdoor activity, food prepared on site and a clear settling sequence give the practical offer substance. The November 2022 judgement provides a positive inspection position, balanced by a concrete concern about waiting between activities. The strongest visit discussion would connect that concern with the routines your child would experience now.
