Allotment visits, visiting health professionals and play shaped by children's interests characterised Spring Nursery Layfield's day in May 2024. Based within Layfield Primary School in Yarm, it has capacity for 48 children aged 2 to 60 months.
At its 23 May 2024 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Good and found safeguarding effective. The practical reservations concerned help with independence at mealtimes and more targeted advice for parents following development checks.
In May 2024, learning connected movement, conversation and early mathematics: exercise included words about position and space, alongside discussion of water, rest and the body. The early years foundation stage sets the requirements for children's learning, development and care; here, the inspection-time examples show how play brought different areas of learning together.
Children's interests shaped the next activity. In May 2024, collecting leaves led to comparisons of colour, shape and size, making an outdoor discovery a starting point for discussion rather than an isolated task. Babies practised transferring sand with differently sized spoons, while older children experimented with shaping gloop. These were hands-on opportunities to explore materials and movement.
Outdoor learning extended beyond collecting natural objects. In May 2024, children visited an allotment and talked about the seeds they had grown. Nurses, dental hygienists and police officers also visited the setting, bringing people and their work into children's experience. Growing something and meeting a professional give concrete reference points for questions about the wider world.
Everyday social learning had a practical place too. In May 2024, staff reminded children gently about sharing and taking turns, and praised good manners. This gave children examples of how to play alongside others, with guidance woven into ordinary activities. The exercise activities also included literacy and conversation, so movement was a starting point for learning beyond physical skills. For parents, these examples show what an integrated day meant in practice: children could explore language, relationships and mathematical ideas through the same activity, rather than treating each as a separate task.
At the May 2024 inspection, Ofsted found that the key-person arrangements supported close knowledge of individual children, babies' feeding and sleep routines were respected, and children with SEND received support involving speech and language therapists and physiotherapists. For families, the useful detail is the combination of personal routines and specialist involvement.
In May 2024, staff helped parents with weaning and toilet training, and shared ideas for making play dough, creating instruments and exploring sounds. Support reached into everyday family life. However, development checks for children aged between two and three needed more specific home activities to address gaps in learning.
Mealtimes also needed attention. In May 2024, some staff breaks overlapped with children's meals, reducing the adult help available for practising independence and personal care. This was an issue about how support was organised during the day, rather than an identified failure to maintain required staffing ratios.
The address is Layfield Primary School, Everingham Road, Yarm, TS15 9TF. Opening hours are 7.30am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, across the year, with closures for bank holidays and Christmas.
In May 2024, the nursery provided funded early education for children aged two, three and four. Current prices come in the nursery's written quotation.
The school site is a useful part of the setting's context: in May 2024, staff worked with the on-site school as well as parents and other professionals. Attending the nursery does not guarantee a Reception place at Layfield Primary School; families still use the local authority admissions process.
Spring Nursery Layfield suits families seeking childcare on a primary-school site and a learning experience grounded in practical exploration. Its May 2024 examples, from growing seeds to following babies' individual routines, give substance to that appeal. The May 2024 improvement points qualify that picture: support during meals and targeted guidance for learning at home needed attention.
