The Nursery of Narnia and out of school club, Moredon

At a Glance

Independence takes a practical form at this Moredon Community Centre setting: pouring drinks, helping with mealtimes and persevering with small tasks were part of children's learning in August 2024. These everyday experiences gave children opportunities to practise doing things for themselves.

Ofsted rated the nursery Good on 27 August 2024 and found safeguarding effective. The setting has capacity for 81 children; the children attending at that visit were aged 1 to 4, a dated description rather than a current intake range.

The Nursery Experience

In August 2024, learning followed the early years foundation stage, the framework for children's learning, development and care. Play and everyday routines put that framework into practice: children shaped dough, discussed their creations and tackled tasks such as peeling fruit. Adults encouraged another attempt when something proved difficult. Persistence mattered alongside the finished result.

Physical play had several forms that month. Children used plastic cars, climbed equipment and took turns on a slide, while weekly physical education sessions involved instructions and group games. A stage gave children somewhere to perform for their peers. Dressing independently also formed part of preparation for school.

Stories and rhymes supplied opportunities to join in with actions, remember events and discuss characters in August 2024. Adults introduced vocabulary, although clearer speech modelling remained an improvement priority. The distinction matters: hearing a new word and hearing it pronounced accurately are separate parts of learning to communicate.

Care and Support

At the August 2024 inspection, Ofsted found that staff knew children well, tracked their learning and used additional resources to support vulnerable children, with good progress from their starting points. Activities drew on termly themes and the next steps identified for individual children.

During that month, reassurance and cuddles were part of the relationships between adults and children. Parents received detailed feedback about learning and development, alongside advice and practical support. Links with nearby shops and businesses helped provide food and resources for families who needed them, extending support beyond activities in the nursery.

Behaviour support needed greater consistency in August 2024. Adults encouraged manners, kindness and turn-taking, but their responses to disagreements did not consistently help children understand the emotional effect of their actions. That was a concrete improvement task, alongside speech modelling.

Practical Information

The address is Moredon Community Centre, The Street, Swindon, SN25 3ER. In August 2024, opening hours were 7am to 6pm on weekdays, with operation throughout the year.

At that time, the nursery received funding for free early education for children aged three and four. This describes participation at the inspection date.

Things to Consider

  • Speech modelling. In August 2024, adults needed to model pronunciation more consistently. Ask how staff now help children hear and practise words clearly.
  • Responses to disagreements. The August 2024 improvement work included a more consistent approach to behaviour. Ask how practitioners help children understand feelings and the effects of their actions.
  • Planning attendance. The August 2024 opening window covered weekdays throughout the year. Which current booking patterns and funded-hours arrangements would fit your child's age and your working week?

The Verdict

The August 2024 picture suits families who value practical independence, active play and help that extends to family circumstances. Mealtime tasks, movement sessions and feedback about learning give that picture substance. The Good judgement sits alongside specific work on pronunciation and behaviour, making those two areas useful priorities when assessing the nursery today.
