Kids Planet Dukinfield

At a Glance

Frozen dinosaurs freed with hammers, fruit explored through taste and touch, and babies asking for another song: Kids Planet Dukinfield’s September 2022 learning experiences had a practical, inquisitive character. Children had things to investigate and reasons to talk. At its 9 September 2022 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Outstanding, with communication, relationships and purposeful activities prominent in its findings.

On Jeffreys Drive in Dukinfield, the nursery has capacity for 80 children aged 3 to 60 months. Secure outdoor areas give children space beyond the indoor setting, while the nearby park, shops and local library place it within an everyday village setting in Tameside.

Full-day, morning and afternoon bookings give families different ways to use the nursery. The important distinction for budgeting is between private fees, which include everyday supplies, and days using funded hours, when meals, consumables and activities carry separate charges.

The Nursery Experience

Learning and Activities

The early years foundation stage sets the requirements for children’s learning, development and care: in everyday terms, play, conversation and practical experiences help children develop their skills. September 2022 examples made that tangible. Children investigated ice containing dinosaurs and explored fruit, bringing changes in materials, texture and taste into activities they could discuss rather than simply watch.

For babies in September 2022, songs involved gestures and joining in with words. Some signalled that they wanted the singing to continue when an activity ended. Repeated language and opportunities to make choices gave the youngest children ways to communicate before they could manage a longer conversation.

Older children’s September 2022 activities included questions with more than one possible answer, followed by time to think. That pause matters: children could form their own response rather than race to supply the answer an adult expected. Problem-solving was part of the exchanges too, linking conversation with reasoning.

Small movements also had a practical purpose in September 2022. Preschool children handled tongs at lunch and screwed into wood using tools, while toddlers cut fruit. These experiences brought hand control into ordinary tasks, connecting preparation for writing with independence and investigation. They were activities children could do for themselves.

Outdoor and Community Life

Secure outdoor areas are part of the current setting. Kids Planet’s group-wide outdoor approach, repeated at Dukinfield, includes observing wildlife, growing vegetables and active play. These give children different reasons to spend time outside: noticing, tending and moving, rather than treating outdoor space only as a break between indoor activities.

In September 2022, community outings included a museum and an art gallery. Children also travelled by bus and tram, with some experiencing public transport for the first time. The journey itself became something to discuss. Those examples show how everyday surroundings can supply new vocabulary and questions, alongside the destination’s attractions.

Care and Support

Relationships and Communication

In September 2022, preparation for a room move began months ahead. Staff discussed the child’s needs before the change, allowing the next key person to start getting acquainted with them. For a child who depends on familiar adults, that makes the handover more than a change of room: someone is already learning what matters to them.

Activity planning in September 2022 drew on staff’s knowledge of individual children and their next developmental steps. Regular bags of learning materials also went home for children across the age groups. This gave families something concrete to use together, connecting nursery experiences with play at home.

Famly, the parent app, provides updates in real time as part of Kids Planet’s group-wide offer at Dukinfield. For parents, its practical value is a connection with the child’s day while they are elsewhere. It sits alongside the relationships with practitioners, rather than making communication depend solely on a conversation at collection.

Inclusion and Wellbeing

At the September 2022 inspection, Ofsted found effective safeguarding and strong support for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities, including early recognition of additional needs, support while referrals progressed and collaboration with outside professionals. The useful detail is the sequence: children received help while the referral process continued, rather than having support depend on its completion.

September 2022 behaviour work involved adults demonstrating considerate behaviour and explaining why an action was unacceptable, then exploring whether the child understood. Children practised taking turns and helping friends. That approach made rules part of a conversation about other people, giving children a reason for the expectation.

Practical Information

Sessions and Attendance

Opening hours are 7.30am to 5.45pm, Monday to Friday, across 52 weeks of the year, with bank holidays closed. Full Day and Full Time bookings run from 7.30am to 5.45pm; Morning runs from 7.30am to 12.30pm, and Afternoon from 12.30pm to 5.45pm. Ad hoc hourly charging provides another booking option.

The morning and afternoon patterns allow a shorter nursery day than a full-day booking. Their different finishing times matter when arranging work or other care: a morning ends at lunchtime, while an afternoon continues to the nursery’s closing time.

Getting There

The address is Jeffreys Drive, Dukinfield, SK16 4BZ, near the local library, shops and park. Families can contact the nursery on 0161 308 2020 or at dukinfield@kidsplanetdaynurseries.co.uk, and a tour can be booked.

Funding and Paid Extras

Funded childcare is offered alongside privately paid care. Private fees include meals and snacks, together with sun cream, formula, wipes and nappies; days on which early years funding is applied carry separate meal, consumable and activity charges. The applicable charge category depends on how much funding is used that day.

Freshly prepared food includes snacks and meals, with dietary needs catered for. Current prices come in the nursery’s written quotation, allowing families to assess their chosen sessions and the funded-day charges together.

Things to Consider

  • Funded-day budgeting. Meals, consumables and activities are charged separately on days using early years funding. Discuss how those charges apply to your proposed morning, afternoon or full-day pattern, including the arrangements for funded hours.
  • Room changes and settling. September 2022 practice included getting the next key person acquainted with a child before a room move. On a tour, ask how the current team prepares for a first start and subsequent moves, using your child’s routines as the starting point.
  • Collection time. Both full-day and afternoon bookings finish at 5.45pm, and late collection carries a charge. That deadline needs to fit the family’s working day and collection arrangements.

The Verdict

Kids Planet Dukinfield suits families choosing between morning, afternoon and full-day care who value practical learning and outdoor space. Its September 2022 examples have substance: babies participating in songs, older children working with tools, and community journeys providing fresh subjects for conversation.

The dated Outstanding judgement gives weight to that account, while the current session choices and included private-care supplies provide clear practical benefits. Families using funding need to budget for the separate charges attached to funded days. The strongest fit is where the attendance pattern, collection deadline and child’s developing independence work together.
