Confident children helping each other with their shoes give Kingsteignton Day Nursery a recognisable character: everyday independence and consideration for friends matter here. In December 2025, toddlers persevered with getting ready for outdoor play and celebrated each other's success.
At its December 2025 inspection, Ofsted judged behaviour and routines, welfare, inclusion, and leadership to be Strong standard, with achievement and curriculum and teaching at Expected standard, and safeguarding standards met. The balance matters: care and relationships earned stronger judgements than teaching.
The nursery accepts children from three months to five years.
The early years foundation stage sets the requirements for children's learning, development and care, connecting play with language, physical skills and social development. In December 2025, group activities included storytelling, singing and counting games outdoors.
A tyre trail became part of acting out a bear-hunt story, with older children helping younger ones balance. Trikes gave older children opportunities to practise coordination, while adults supported babies taking their first steps. These were practical learning experiences, with movement woven into the day.
Makaton, sign language used to support communication and understanding, accompanied group songs in December 2025. Children signed greetings and the days of the week. Books also prompted conversations between friends, rather than being confined to adult-led story time.
Teaching during children's independently chosen play needed more consistent interactions to extend their understanding. In December 2025, leaders were addressing this, but the improvements were still being embedded. This is the central educational reservation.
At the December 2025 inspection, Ofsted found secure relationships between babies and their key persons, effective support for children's individual needs, continuing progress for children with SEND, and staff understanding of safer sleep with monitoring during naps.
Settling arrangements in December 2025 drew on parents' knowledge of routines, interests and additional needs, with introductory sessions adjusted to each child. That gave staff information they could use from the outset.
Support included early referrals for speech and language needs, regular discussions about children's development, and reviews of targeted teaching. Parents' meetings ran across a week with different appointment times, making participation easier for families. Staff also worked with parents on toilet training and helped children name their feelings when sharing became difficult.

For families seeking weekday childcare across the year, Kingsteignton merits consideration for its December 2025 strengths in relationships, routines and inclusion. The tyre-trail storytelling and signing songs show how shared activities supported participation. Families placing greatest weight on teaching should weigh those strengths alongside the specific improvement needed during independent play.
