Great Bentley Pre-School

At a Glance

Pouring drinks, mixing play dough and taking responsibility for tidying gave children practical ways to learn at Great Bentley Pre-School in July 2025. Independence ran through these everyday experiences, rather than being reserved for a separate activity.

Ofsted rated the pre-school Good on 17 July 2025. Based at Great Bentley Village Hall in Colchester, it has 32 places in total; children attending at that visit were aged two to four.

The Nursery Experience

In July 2025, children chose what to explore, served food at snack time and practised pouring their own drinks. These small tasks gave them opportunities to make decisions and develop coordination.

The early years foundation stage is the framework for children's learning, development and care. Here, the July 2025 activities brought those elements together through practical play: making play dough involved measuring flour and water, handling utensils and learning words for ingredients. One activity exercised hands, language and mathematical thinking.

Outside, the garden offered large bikes for balance and coordination, alongside a sand pit for building sandcastles. Staff used sand timers to help children take turns with equipment. Physical play also made room for cooperation.

There were weaknesses alongside those examples. In July 2025, lunchtime was not used fully to develop conversation and social skills, and staff sometimes missed opportunities to adjust their interactions and extend children's thinking. The improvement priorities were more consistent curriculum delivery and stronger staff skills in taking learning further.

Care and Support

At the July 2025 inspection, Ofsted found safeguarding effective and children with special educational needs and/or disabilities well supported, with cooperation between families and professionals helping those needing additional support make good progress.

Settling sessions were tailored to individual children in July 2025, giving staff time to understand their needs from the start. Staff offered reassurance and encouraged children to follow routines, including helping to tidy before garden play. Assessments tracked learning and next steps, which were shared with parents; children learning English as an additional language also received language support.

Practical Information

Great Bentley Pre-School's address is Great Bentley Village Hall, Plough Road, Great Bentley, Colchester, Essex CO7 8LG.

In July 2025, attendance ran during term time, Monday to Friday. Session times were 9.15am to 3.30pm, except on Tuesdays, when they ended at 12.15pm. That shorter Tuesday mattered for anyone arranging care around work.

At that time, the pre-school provided funded early education for eligible children.

Things to Consider

  • Learning beyond the activity. July 2025 findings highlighted missed opportunities at lunchtime and uneven extension of children's thinking. Ask how staff now build conversation and deeper learning into everyday routines.
  • The Tuesday pattern. Tuesdays finished at 12.15pm in July 2025, while the other weekday sessions ended at 3.30pm. At a visit, confirm how the current attendance pattern fits your working week.

The Verdict

Great Bentley Pre-School suits families drawn to practical independence, hands-on play and a village-hall setting. Its July 2025 offer served both families seeking sessions extending into the afternoon and those using the shorter Tuesday session, within a term-time calendar. The balance to weigh is concrete: useful everyday learning experiences alongside a need for staff to extend that learning more consistently.
