Little Pumpkins Nursery

At a Glance

Communication gives Little Pumpkins Nursery much of its character: whole-setting Elklan training centres on how adults interact with children, while play follows children’s interests with guidance from practitioners. This Lawford nursery combines that attention to language with outdoor experiences and contact with the local community. There is substance behind the emphasis on conversation.

At its 19 April 2024 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Good and found safeguarding effective. The improvement point concerned helping experienced practitioners share their teaching practice with colleagues. That is a useful distinction for parents: the next step was about spreading expertise across the staff team.

Little Pumpkins has capacity for 55 children, from birth to five. Its address is The Early Years Unit 2, The Avenue, Lawford, Manningtree, CO11 2FR. Opening hours run from 7.30am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, across 50 weeks of the year.

The Nursery Experience

Rooms and Ages

The Under twos room, two year old room and Pre primary room appear in the nursery’s 2026 account of activities. The two year old room and Pre primary room have taken part in forest schools, an approach involving learning outdoors; preschool children have also enjoyed football. These experiences give older children ways to explore and move beyond their indoor play.

In April 2024, resources were positioned within children’s reach indoors and outside, allowing them to choose what to use. Babies recognised their own photographs on water bottles and began getting drinks for themselves. Small environmental choices made independence something children could practise during an ordinary day.

Learning and Activities

The Early years foundation stage provides the framework for children’s learning, development and care, with play offering opportunities to communicate, explore and practise everyday skills. Alongside it, Birth to 5 Matters helps practitioners observe development, assess learning and plan support. The emphasis is on understanding the individual child rather than expecting everyone to follow an identical path.

Little Pumpkins Learning Approach starts with children’s interests, experiences and cultural backgrounds. Adults extend play through conversation, encouragement and example. For parents, the practical distinction is that child-led learning still includes purposeful adult involvement: practitioners help a child take an interest further rather than simply leaving play to unfold.

In April 2024, familiar stories and rhymes supported early communication, and a handwashing song helped children remember hygiene routines. Practitioners allowed thinking time during conversations and time to attempt tasks such as counting or putting on a coat. The pace gave children room to try, reconsider and try again.

Outdoor and Community Life

A greenhouse brought growing into children’s experience in April 2024. Children showed their potatoes to visitors and watered plants after noticing dry soil. This connected care for living things with something they could see changing, rather than treating nature as an occasional topic.

Trips at that time included the local park, beach and library. The 2026 activities account adds a visit from PACE, a local community group, for the Pre primary children. A people-who-help-us topic also brought visits involving a road sweeper, tractor and building company. Familiar community work became something children could investigate through real vehicles and visitors.

Care and Support

Relationships and Communication

In April 2024, settling arrangements were adapted to children individually, helping babies and children establish relationships with practitioners. Parents received updates both online and in person each day. That combination gave families information about the nursery day and opportunities for direct conversation with staff.

Elklan training now informs the Communication Friendly Setting work, which addresses adult interaction, the physical environment, inclusive practice and continuing assessment. Its value is concrete: communication support is considered across the setting, rather than confined to a single activity or resource.

Inclusion and Wellbeing

At the April 2024 inspection, Ofsted found that targeted support from trained staff helped children with delayed speech and language make good progress. Children also used Makaton to support communication at that time. The finding gives parents a specific example of support in practice, rather than a broad promise about inclusion.

An Opportunity and inclusion officer works with families, key staff and outside professionals around individual needs. This provides a named role for coordinating support and bringing different perspectives together.

The setting has completed Essex TPP training as part of Trauma Perceptive Practice (TPP), an approach to understanding behaviour and supporting emotional wellbeing among children and staff. In April 2024, practitioners also helped young children identify emotions and supported sharing and turn-taking. These are related strands, though the training and the earlier daily practice belong to different points in time.

Practical Information

Sessions and Attendance

Opening hours are 7.30am to 6pm on weekdays, with the nursery operating for 50 weeks each year. This gives families a clear operating window around which to assess their childcare needs.

The contact route includes an enquiry form, email and telephone. Visits can be arranged through the nursery. The contact address uses The Nursery Unit 2, The Avenue, Lawford Green, Lawford, Essex, CO11 2FR.

Funding and Paid Extras

In April 2024, the nursery provided funded early education for two-, three- and four-year-old children. Current prices come in the nursery’s written quotation; the distinction between entitlement, attendance and additional charges matters when comparing the total cost of childcare.

Hot lunch is served daily. This makes lunchtime part of the nursery’s practical offer, with the current menu providing the basis for discussing a child’s food needs.

Things to Consider

  • Teaching across the team. The April 2024 improvement point was to expand opportunities for practitioners to learn from one another. At a visit, ask how experienced colleagues now demonstrate their practice and support others.
  • The complete attendance quotation. The nursery opens for 50 weeks, from 7.30am to 6pm on weekdays. What session patterns and current funded arrangements can your child use, and how are meals, consumables and any additional hours treated in the written quotation?
  • Communication support in daily play. Elklan training addresses interactions and the learning environment, while an Opportunity and inclusion officer coordinates individual support. Ask how those arrangements would work for your child, including contact with outside professionals where relevant.

The Verdict

Little Pumpkins suits families who value learning through children’s interests, purposeful conversation and opportunities to explore outdoors. Elklan training and the coordination of individual support give its communication emphasis practical shape. Community visitors feature in the nursery’s 2026 activities; greenhouse growing and independent everyday tasks also enriched children’s experience in April 2024.

The April 2024 Good judgement provides a clear inspection position, with a specific development point around sharing staff expertise. For parents choosing care from babyhood onwards, the combination of age-related rooms, adult guidance and weekday opening offers a useful basis for assessing fit.
