Bright Horizons Chilworth Day Nursery and Preschool

At a Glance

Mud kitchens, potion stations and a garden reserved for babies give Chilworth a clear outdoor character. This purpose-built nursery on Southampton Science Park combines spaces for different stages of childhood with opportunities to explore outside. The practical appeal is straightforward: babies have their own outdoor space, while older children can move between their room and garden activities.

Bright Horizons Chilworth Day Nursery and Preschool has capacity for 64 children, accepting ages from four months to five years. At its 3 July 2024 inspection, Ofsted judged the nursery Good overall, found safeguarding effective and recognised effective individual support for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), while requiring greater challenge in mathematics. A later organisational safeguarding notice needs to be weighed alongside that dated judgement.

The Nursery Experience

Rooms and Ages

Babies has its own garden, including provision for children who are not yet mobile. Toddlers occupies a smaller room intended to support interaction with adults, with direct access to the larger garden. In Nursery room, the emphasis is on language, independence and children's developing personalities. Pre-School combines preparation for school with play using materials that children can use in different ways.

Garden access runs across the rooms. Mud kitchens, potion stations and large loose parts extend exploration outdoors, giving children materials to mix, move and experiment with rather than a single prescribed activity. For families comparing the baby and toddler experience, the separate baby garden and smaller toddler room are useful differences to consider.

Learning and Activities

The early years foundation stage sets the framework for children's learning, development and care, bringing language, physical skills and growing independence into everyday play and routines. Alongside it, the group-wide Bright Beginnings Curriculum connects learning with wellbeing and supports transitions between rooms and preparation for school.

In July 2024, activities followed children's interests: water play involved filling containers with a hose, while kitchen utensils became tools for transferring bark into pans. These examples show how ordinary materials could sustain purposeful play. Adults joined children in working through what they wanted to achieve, rather than simply setting out equipment.

Stories and conversation also featured in July 2024. Children practised listening together and invented stories of their own; songs, rhymes and conversations during sand play created opportunities to use new words. Mathematics was the weaker strand: staff did not consistently push children's understanding further. That is a specific curriculum question for a visit.

Outdoor movement had a similarly practical form in July 2024. Children balanced on wooden planks and old tyres, with adults helping them control their movements. Music and movement added another route into physical activity. The combination gave outdoor learning both an imaginative and a physical purpose.

Care and Support

Settling is gradual and responsive to the child. Sessions build towards the different transitions within a nursery day, rather than concentrating solely on the first separation from a parent. This makes the approach relevant to children who need time to become comfortable with changing activities and routines as well as unfamiliar surroundings.

The group-wide Family app connects parents with their child's experiences and development. In July 2024, an online exchange also allowed parents and staff to share information about individual needs and progress, alongside information about the curriculum. The value is continuity: home knowledge can inform nursery care, and parents can understand what their child is working on.

Individual learning plans formed part of SEND support in July 2024, with the special educational needs coordinator working alongside parents, practitioners and other professionals. Everyday independence was also practised in small steps: children used tongs to serve food, cleaned their faces after eating and, as they grew older, worked on coats, toileting and handwashing with an adult nearby.

In its outcome dated 22 June 2026, Ofsted reported an organisational Welfare Requirements Notice for Bright Horizons. Significant weaknesses in organisational safeguarding had led to breaches at some settings, and the provider had not demonstrated that it could ensure consistently effective safeguarding across its provision. The actions concerned organisational arrangements, with concerns not identified at every setting and the majority continuing to meet requirements. Action was required by 1 August 2026, covering leadership, oversight, consistent safeguarding practice, escalation of concerns, allegations against staff and the effectiveness of training and supervision.

At Chilworth, the separate outcome dated 8 May 2026 recorded unmet requirements and corrective action already taken, including a review of safeguarding training and risk assessments. That branch action and the subsequent organisational notice are both material considerations for families.

Practical Information

Sessions and Attendance

The address is University Parkway, Southampton Science Park, Southampton, SO16 7PT. Opening hours are 7.45am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, while the Full Day booking runs from 8am to 6pm. Those are different start times, which matters when matching childcare to a working day.

Funded childcare uses ten-hour sessions beginning at the nursery's opening time. Additional hours outside the funded session are charged separately, and purchasing them is not a condition of accessing a funded place. The nursery operates throughout the year, closing for an inset day, bank and public holidays, and the period between Christmas and New Year.

A dedicated drop-off area supports families travelling by car. Local bus routes are also close to the nursery.

Funding and Paid Extras

Funded and privately paid childcare are offered. Funding arrangements include the 15-hour and 30-hour entitlements, subject to eligibility, stretched over 50 weeks. This spreads funded attendance across more of the year than a term-time arrangement. Current prices come in the nursery's written quotation.

For private fees, meals and snacks are included, together with nappies, wipes and formula for babies under one year, subject to the provider's qualification that a small number of nurseries cannot supply every listed item; funded attendance has a separate, non-mandatory food charge. Consumables associated with funded hours are supplied by Bright Horizons. Additional private childcare hours remain a separate part of the bill, so the distinction between funded time, food and extra attendance matters when comparing costs.

A chef works on site and food is freshly prepared. Fees are paid in advance through monthly direct debit, and a registration charge applies. These payment arrangements belong in the household's planning alongside the chosen attendance pattern.

Things to Consider

  • Organisational safeguarding action. The notice dated 22 June 2026 required changes to safeguarding oversight and practice by 1 August 2026. At a visit, ask how Chilworth implements those requirements and what assurance families receive about the response.
  • Mathematical challenge. In July 2024, mathematical learning was not consistently extended. Ask for examples of how staff now develop children's understanding and adapt activities for those ready for a harder task.
  • Funding and start times. Full Day bookings start at 8am, while funded sessions begin at opening time, 7.45am. Compare the attendance agreement and written quotation, including the separate food charge and any additional hours, against your working pattern.
  • Included nappies and wipes. The included-items offer carries a qualification that some nurseries cannot supply everything listed. Confirm that Chilworth's private fees include the nappies and wipes your child will need.

The Verdict

Chilworth suits families seeking weekday Full Day bookings or attendance organised around stretched funded sessions. Its strongest practical features are the baby garden, direct outdoor access and gradual settling arrangements, with parent communication through the Family app. The July 2024 findings provide a positive educational picture with a clear mathematics caveat. The later organisational safeguarding notice is material to the decision and deserves equal weight.
