A private roof garden gives babies their own outdoor space, while the downstairs garden brings sand, garden games and a mud kitchen into the day. Bright Horizons Romsey Day Nursery and Preschool has a purpose-built setting with four rooms, a sensory room and a separate space for sleeping. These are useful distinctions for families weighing opportunities for exploration alongside somewhere to rest.
The nursery has capacity for 66 children, accepting ages from 4 months to 5 years. At its July 2023 inspection, Ofsted rated it Good, judged safeguarding effective and found that children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) received effective support and made good progress. Those judgements belong to that visit: a later organisational safeguarding notice also matters to the decision today.
The early years foundation stage provides the framework for children's learning, development and care: play, conversation and practical activities help children build skills as they grow. In July 2023, babies explored photographs of themselves and their friends and shook musical objects alongside songs. Older children combined wooden blocks with dinosaur play, talking together about their creations. Familiar objects and shared interests gave staff starting points for conversation.
Preschool activities in July 2023 included dismantling a keyboard and an old telephone with screwdrivers. Children returned to earlier learning and remembered precautions for using the equipment. This was hands-on exploration with a purpose, allowing children to investigate how objects fit together rather than simply watching an adult demonstrate.
There were limitations, too. In July 2023, plans to develop independence did not consistently translate into practice: adults sometimes put children's coats on for them. Indoor noise also interrupted some children's concentration. Both issues matter because an appealing activity only helps when children can take part and have enough time and space to try things themselves.
Babies have access to the upstairs roof garden and sensory room. Downstairs, the larger garden contains a sand pit, a mud kitchen and games. Separating these spaces gives families concrete features to compare across stages, rather than treating outdoor provision as a single shared patch.
In July 2023, children used tyres and crates to devise a garden obstacle course. They discussed what to add and considered whether their construction was safe. The activity joined movement with decision-making and cooperation. Younger children practised taking turns while building towers, and older children worked together on a floor puzzle, giving everyday play a social dimension as well.
Daily communication has both a current digital route and a dated example of practical home support. The group-wide Family app connects parents with children's experiences and development at nursery. In July 2023, staff also exchanged learning information with parents each day, offered activities for home and ran a book lending library. That combination linked conversation at nursery with things families could do together afterwards.
For children with SEND, July 2023 practice included signs and visual prompts to explain activities and routines. Staff exchanged information with other professionals and used it in planning children's next steps. These are concrete support mechanisms, rather than a general promise that every need will be met in the same way.
Rest has its own physical provision: a sleeping room is available. Meals are freshly prepared, and an onsite chef is part of the offer; private fees include snacks and three meals, alongside nappies, wipes and formula for babies under 1 year.
The later safeguarding position requires separate attention. In its notice dated 22 June 2026, Ofsted required Bright Horizons Family Solutions Limited to strengthen organisational safeguarding leadership, oversight and practice by 1 August 2026, explaining that the actions did not represent concerns at every individual setting but that the organisation had not demonstrated consistently effective safeguarding across its provision. The latest published position is that notice and its required actions; it should not be read as a finding that the Romsey branch itself had every weakness identified across the organisation.
The actions addressed how concerns are recognised, recorded and escalated, how allegations involving staff are handled, and how training and supervision are monitored. For parents, the practical issue is how those organisational responsibilities translate into decisions and accountability within this nursery.
The address is 18 Abbottswood Common Road, Romsey, SO51 0BX. Opening hours are 7.45am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, while the full-day booking runs from 8am to 6pm. The opening window and the booked day therefore have different starting times.
Care runs across the year, with closures for an inset day, bank and public holidays, and the period between Christmas and New Year. Fees are collected monthly by direct debit in advance. Additional sessions have their own rates, and a registration charge applies. Current prices come in the nursery's written quotation.
Onsite parking and a buggy park support families travelling by car or pushchair, and the nursery is near the A3090. Enquiries can be made by telephone or through the nursery's Ask A Question route.
Funded childcare is offered alongside private care. The funding arrangements include 30 hours for eligible children from 9 months and at age 2, plus 15-hour and 30-hour entitlements for the older age band. Funding is stretched over 50 weeks rather than delivered solely during term time, so the headline entitlement does not represent the same number of funded hours in every attendance week.
Funded bookings use sessions lasting 10 hours, beginning when the nursery opens. Hours outside the funded session are charged separately; purchasing those additional hours is not a requirement for accessing a funded place. This distinction matters when matching childcare to a working day.
Private fees include meals and everyday consumables. For funded hours, food is charged separately, with the charge expressly non-mandatory and not a condition of a funded place; the nursery supplies the associated consumables. Families should therefore distinguish the funded childcare itself from food and any extra time when comparing the total arrangement.
Romsey suits families seeking care across the year, whether through private full-day bookings or stretched funded childcare, and those who value separate outdoor spaces for babies alongside practical garden play for older children. The roof garden, sensory provision and sleeping space give the setting a recognisable physical character.
July 2023 practice offered useful examples of conversation, cooperation and hands-on investigation, but independence and indoor noise needed attention. The June 2026 organisational safeguarding notice is also material to a present-day choice. These considerations belong alongside the nursery's facilities and attendance arrangements when deciding whether it fits your child.
