Bright Start Margate

At a Glance

Mint grown outdoors, dinosaur fossils and Peggy the tortoise give Bright Start Margate's May 2022 account its character: learning connected to things children could handle, explore and discuss. At its May 2022 inspection, Ofsted judged the nursery Good, found safeguarding effective and recognised a curriculum supporting children with SEND to make good progress.

Bright Start Margate accepts children aged 3 to 59 months. Its address is Mortimer House, 24 Hartsdown Road, Margate, CT9 5QT. The inspection observations below describe May 2022 practice.

The Nursery Experience

In May 2022, children's interests shaped activities. A fascination with dinosaurs led to sand play, ice containing dinosaurs and fossil painting. Younger children explored water and paint; older children investigated ice and animal care. These examples show how one interest could become several different kinds of play.

The early years foundation stage is the framework for children's learning, development and care. Here, the May 2022 examples show learning through practical exploration, conversation and play.

Forest school, an outdoor learning activity, supplied mint that children had grown. Back indoors, the leaves became part of ice exploration and play dough linked to oral hygiene. Peggy the tortoise prompted discussion of animal body parts. Familiar objects gave children something concrete to talk about.

During May 2022, babies danced to Romanian music, while food tasting and role-play resources introduced other cultures. Children also helped one another during group activities and shared skills through play dough and pretend hairdressing. Social learning ran alongside practical discovery.

Care and Support

In May 2022, babies received cuddles and responsive interaction from their key people. Children chose toys independently and engaged readily with adults, combining reassurance with room to explore.

At the May 2022 inspection, Ofsted found that additional funding supported SEND provision through emotional-support books and toys and changes to the physical environment. These were concrete adjustments to resources and surroundings.

Staff received regular training in May 2022, including child protection and local safeguarding issues. Risk assessments addressed hazards, and recruitment procedures checked suitability. Training also supported staff's knowledge and practice more broadly.

Communication was the improvement priority. In May 2022, staff introduced vocabulary during water play and asked questions, but opportunities to develop children's language were sometimes missed. The recommendation was to make this practice more consistent across staff.

Practical Information

The nursery is open all year, closing for bank holidays and Christmas. Opening hours are 7.45am to 6pm, Monday to Friday; this is the opening window.

In May 2022, the nursery received early-education funding for children aged two, three and four. That is a dated account of funding participation.

Things to Consider

  • Language development. Extending conversation consistently was the May 2022 improvement priority. During a visit, look at how staff develop children's ideas while playing alongside them.
  • Attendance and funded costs. For this all-year nursery, ask which booking patterns and funded arrangements apply to your child's age, including how meals and consumables are handled.

The Verdict

Bright Start Margate suits families seeking all-year childcare. Practical, interest-led learning was a strength at its May 2022 inspection. Its May 2022 strengths lay in responsive relationships, connected activities and concrete inclusion measures. Consistency in extending children's language is the useful counterweight to that positive picture.
